Math exam tonight... couple questions...

I got above 90% average in the course so I'm not too concerned... but there are a couple questions I can't figure out.
First one is long division. (2x^3 - 10x^2 - x - 22) / (2x +1)

After that I'm just stuck and don't know what to do with it.
And finally this question:
The volume of a given mass of has varies directly as the temperature T and inversely as the pressure P. If V=231 cm^3 when T=42 degrees C and P=20(kg/cm^2), what is the volume when T=30 degrees C and P=15(kg/cm^2)
And I just don't understand that one at all.

I think the second one is saying that you should go by this formula: V=T/P But I'm not sure at all, so try to test it. That's the best I can do with my level.

if it is V= T/P, then that would mean 42/20 would equal 231. So it can't be that.
And I don't see any other way of relating 42 and 20 to 231.

ton the 1st problem you have to factor out what you have left up there(-x^2 +4x -22)...uhh use the quadriatic formula.

Then you'd have -4 +- the root of -72, all over -2.
So basically they'd be imaginary numbers because of the negative in the square root.
I don't understand how this could be applied to the question.

isnt the quadratic formula like b+- square root of b^2+2ac all over 2a?

No.
It's -b +- square root of b^2 - 4ac all over 2a.

ok, for #2 you're forgetting the constant ratio for the gas.
the formula is actually V= RT/P where R is the ratio determined by solving for R, R=VP/T then plugging in your given P,V, and T for the gas.
so if at T=42 degC, V=231 cm^3 and P=20 kg/cm^2
then R= ((20kg/cm^2)x(231cm^3)) / 42C
which equals 4620/42, or 110 (kg x cm)/C
plug in this R for the second set in the form V=RT/P, and you have
V= (110 x 30) / 15 = 220 cm^3
the wierd '(kg x cm)/degC' form that the R value takes allows all the extraneous units of measure to cancel out in solving the equation, leaving you with your desired V units of cm^3 for the given P and T of the problem
note: sometimes R will be written 'r' or 'k', but it's all the same, in every formula of this type there must be this constant of change

Still there? If you are for the first one the final bit you have would be your remainder.
Second question V1*P1/T1=V2*P2/T2 Fill in the blanks and calculate.
Edit: Whoops (and to above poster, although you could use Universal gas law this is a relationship question and only needs the combined gas law, or even Boyles law (P1*V1=P2*V2), R = 0.08206 isn't needed)

good point. i tend to use whatever method comes to mind first, it's not always the best one for the job

Hmm, well thanks guys, and we weren't supposed to know any physics formula for the question.
Turns out the test didn't involve either of those questions... except there was a division one but there was no remainder. I also asked a class mate what the deal with the first question was, and he said we were supposed to use fraction coefficients.
Also I ended up doing EXTREMELY well on the exam. I'm sure I must have gotten somewhere around the middle to upper 90s on it since I checked all the answers.
