Stop my medication?
    #5529682 - 04/18/06 02:07 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

So last fall I went crazy and ended up breaking into someones house, breaking a window at mc donalds, resisting arrest, assulting a police officer. Words can't describe why I did such things, its like explaining an acid trip, except I was sober for two months.

so they got me on this good medication called Zyprexa, and im just wondering what I would be like without it. If I could live without it, thats less money I have to spend on the medication itself, which is about 300$ a month, but if I go out of control, the legal system wont be as nice to me the second time around, because I got off scott free for all that shit I did when I went insane. So what do you all think?

Alright, so say you quit taking it. What if you go crazy again?

Will you resume taking it? Or do you plan on becoming one of those loonies on the street who wanders around with two mismatched shoes on, muttering to himself?

If its working for you, then why stop?

Would you rather be batshit crazy and have more money or somewhat balanced and broke? Its your decision in the long run, but if you were as bad as you describe, I suggest you stay on it.

I heard it can lead to being a diabetic. I gained 70 pounds in the last 6 months, went from 150 to 220, which makes me depressed, but the anti-depressents make me eat more too, so its a real pain in the ass. I think im going to start taking 1/2 the dosage, then keep it like that for maybe a week or two then go to 1/4 the dosage. Thanks for your input man.

well at that point, I didnt know I was skitzo, I wasent on anything so I coudlnt talk myself down. I feel I have more control over the way I think now, but its hard to say how I will react when I get off them, like you say I could go crazy again, and if I seen any sign that this would happen I'd start taking it again, its no big deal to me, the main pain is the weight gain, I eat way too much.

Ween yourself off it. Quiting colt turkey would be hard on your body and mind. While our getting off it be mindful of how you feel.

this is what you do... take the medications around with you... if you ever think that things are going rough, ditch whatever your doing and go home and have the pills.

Why the fuck are you polling random internet people for a question like this? If you really want to stop taking the medication and save money, then go get yourself a psychiatric evaluation before you make any decisions that could affect you in such a massive way in the future.

Seriously, though, I do wish you good luck.

It usually takes months to get into a psychiatrist and chances are they will want to see you a few times before they give you that kind of advice, which will take many more months. I'm sure if he is very mindful everyday of how he's feeling and is around people who would say somethign to him if he starts acting different he will be fine.

I was on the same medication and stopped because I decided too, I didn't notice anything. BUT I"M NOT SAYING YOU WONT, so just be careful.

I understand what your saying, but I doubt my doctor would let me get off this medication, you have to keep in mind that they get a percentage of any medication they perscribe to patients, plus my doctor doesn't know my situation like I do, he just asks the same questions over and over "do you hear voices? are you having any obsession with colors? do you have any weird thoughts?" that kind of thing, hes not really my shrink because we never really talked much. But I feel that I can live without this medication, although im not sure, I havent had any time off the drug to really say, I could be 100% good because of this drug, thats what im setting out to find out.

If I have to quit pot and any other drugs, then so be it, I just don't want to be on this one, the weight gain is just too much for me.

So im going to skip my dosage tonight and carry my medication with me tomarrow, if anything seems wrong, I'll take it and go home and never try this again, well for another three years or so, or whenever my doctor thinks is best.

If I function better off the medication I will discontinue the dosage and talk to my doctor in a month about what I did and see what he thinks, if he says to go back on, I will most likely go back on it. I just need to keep an eye out for weird thoughts, those were my main problem, like being able to get unlimited money from the bank machine .

I wouldn't start skipping doses, just cut them down at first, then after a couple weeks and your doing ok then start every other day with the smaller amounts. It's worked for me on many different meds.

lots of the homeless schizophrenic street people got that way by neglecting to take their medication. What happens is, you start taking medicine, feel better, feel fine for so long, decide you don't need it, stop taking it, and become schizo again. One of the main symptoms of schizophrenia is inability to realize that you are, indeed, crazy. be careful.

Thats so true, I did lots of reading up on the illness and my parents, doctors have told me about those type of cases. I know im schizophrenic, I just want to know if I can live without this medication, or rather keep it for emergencies, but they say its harder to recover each time you have a relapse so that being said I'm quite cautious.

I'm going to skip my dosage tonight and see how things go tomarrow, I'll carry my dose with me during the day incase anything goes bad.

Personally, I think the fact that you feel you could live without your meds is proof that they're working.

A while ago I thought I could live without my depression meds so I stopped taking them. I was wrong.

If you really think your doctor is pushing meds on you to make extra money, find another one immediately. I wouldn't take matters into your own hands though.

I know what your saying, and alot of people make that exact mistake, they start taking anti-psychotic medication and then they feel fine and thing theres nothing wrong with them, so they get off them and everything goes to hell. Theres a chance I could be one of those people, I've been adviced many times not to stop taking them, but by people who don't even understand my situation. I've been through alot, or hell if you want to call it that, and so have my family, I don't want to cause anymore problems for them, but I also don't want to take a drug that has such bad side effects, especially weight gain, because at this rate im going to pass that point of not being able to get back in shape, I work out every day as much as I can and I still gain weight, I've been on diets and have barely lost anything, I've tried fasting but my appitite is too strong because of this medication.

I have nothing agienst over weight people, in fact I have a new understanding of their problem, I just don't want to be over weight and right now im borderline. This is not an easy decision at all, but I want to get back to my original size.
