just one peat question...
    #5529416 - 04/18/06 12:55 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I have a bag of soil that contains 95% peat and 5% perlite, the PH is 5-7.

and a bag of 100% peat moss (pH unknown)

i don't have any pH buffer for the casing, so I'm wondering what the difference is between peat and peat-moss? or is it the same thing?

..one more question...

would it be better do to a casing with 60/40 coir Vern than a casing with 50/50 peat-moss Vern (pH 0)

i've heard peat/verm is better that cococoir/verm, supposedly more even pinset and some other benefits, according to HippieChick...and from what i've seen, she knows what she's talking about

peat moss is the plant (one of them) that creates peat. Peat moss produces acid, which is why it forms peat, as opposed to being broken down by fungi. So I would guess that moss would be closer to neutral than peat, but both would be acidic. Peat moss still has it's cellular structure intact, which is largely geared to hold moisture, so I would guess that moss has better water retention than peat...

But I've never actually used moss, always used peat. I couldn't find a 40lb bag of peat moss for 5 bucks, so I got the peat. From looking at pics, I think most people are using peat as well. For another 5 bucks you can get a 40lb bag of high calcium lime. Another 5 bucks gets you a 4 cubic foot bag of vermiculite. 15 bucks = enough to last a LOOOOONG time.

coir is bad.

there was a comparison thread just like 4 days ago showing that 50/50 tech is 1087e498423947 x better than 60/40 coir tech. just look for it and youl see
