Hornell woman gets jail time for attempted mushroom shipment: Alicia Hamlin receives 3 years in prison
April 18, 2006 - eveningtribune.com BATH - A Hornell woman arrested after trying to ship hallucinogenic mushrooms through the mail has been sentenced to three years in state prison.
Alicia S. Hamlin, 18, of 142 1/2 Hornell St., appeared before Steuben County Judge Peter Bradstreet Monday, receiving the minimum prison term allowed by law. Hamlin pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance Jan. 17.
?I think a three-year sentence is more than sufficient,? Bradstreet said.
Hamlin was charged with those crimes Sept. 30, 2005, after she attempted to ship packages containing mushrooms at Global Package Services on Seneca Street in Hornell. She was trying to mail a package to Huntsville, Ala., Hornell Police Inv. Tom Aini said at the time of the arrest, and was acting suspiciously, which led to the charges.
The company inspected Hamlin's parcel - which she told Global Package employees was an expensive figurine - after she told them she wanted to insure it and have it triple boxed.
?The whole situation ... has reunited me with God,? Hamlin said, adding her imprisonment won't discourage her once she is released.
Donald Kimmel, of the same Hornell Street address, also had been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance in the incident, and was in court as a spectator Monday. According to Aini at the time of the arrest, Kimmel was in a car outside the store waiting for Hamlin, but he allegedly had made the arrangements for payment of the shipping.
Kimmel told The Leader the charges against him had been dropped.
?They didn't have any evidence,? he said.
A representative from the Steuben County Court Clerk's office said Kimmel's record had been sealed and no further information was available.
Includes reporting by The Leader in Corning.

Did it mention anything about how much she tried to send? I've known people who have successfully sent/received small amounts. Usually a couple grams at a time in smaller envelopes. I would guess this must have been a larger amount - and might have either looked or smelled suspicious, causing it to be flagged for investigation or a closer look.

It said she recieved the mandotory minimum.
It also said that she was acting suspicious at the post office. Asking for it to be tripple boxed, and such.

Wasn't a post office, but a packaging service. I have heard the police claim that they usually "only catch the dumb ones" and this is a prime example...

When you go to those packaging places that aren't USPS the employees can look through your shit if they want, you generally can read all about it on your receipt.

I remember this, she tried to send a little statue or something in a box that had a bag of mushrooms inside. This was on here previously.

The point is she was trying to INSURE the fucking package!
If she would have just mailed it, no questions, but since she wanted to insure the "figurine" the employees probably wanted to take a look at it to make sure there was something to insure and it was what she said.
Stupid, stupid, stupid...
