2:

a few hours later
2b:

and what are these?
3:

i've reached my upload limit for today, but tomorrow i'll try and add some more pics of the same mushrooms from different angles.

A spore print on the first and last species should help get a better idea. Hard to even see the gills on that last picture. Seeing the gill attachment and structure is important.
The first ones look familiar to me, with the cluster growing - either way a print would help to be more sure.
I've never seen Weraroa novaezelandiae, I don't even know if it occurs in my country - all of the online literature I can find suggests they grow in NZ (which is consistent with your location) and as far as I can tell it looks right to me... I' don't have any actual experience picking it, but found some info via google and searches. I found some discussion about it in this thread:

I'm guessing Psathyrella on the first pics, but it is a total guess. Those Weraroas are crazy looking, thanks for the pics.

3 kinda looks like subaeruginosa although i cant see staining.
check it for blue staining after picking a specimen and check for a purple print.

1 and 1b look inactive, unsure what genus.

are you sure 2 and 2b are the same? cause the mush in 2 is white and in 2b it looks brown/tan.

Hi OOISI, i might have got 2 and 2b mixed up, as they where all next to each other when they where picked i asumed they'd be the same.

i was thinking that the 2b's could be liberty caps but they look too closed over, but the nipple on top and dark spaced out gills is confusing me.

off hunting again this weekend, we'll see whats about.

thanks your help!

Hey Sneak......ya believe it or not pic 1, 1b, 3, and your last mushroom pic are (EDIT: ALL) the highly variable and probably highly poisonous Hypholoma fasciculare.......and as I'm sure you already have a good idea the other is Weraroa......probable ancestor to Psilocybe and the whole Strophariaceae family.......its a good idea to get to know that Hypholoma and all its puzzling forms well......can also be extremely deep sulfur yellow at times......quite striking.....and this genus EXTREMELY closely related to Psilocybe but this Hypholoma by no means active like others in the group.....

The bluing mushrooms, fit in better with a description of makarorae, which is a psilocybe species i know hardly anything about. Semis have brown flesh i think and im pretty sure they dont have white stems like that. Also ive only heard of makarorae growing in June or July never this early so that just confuses me further.

All ill say now though is that 2 looks like a weraroa and 2b looks like a psilocybe so get that looked into.

Hi, thanks for everyones reply.

I'm amazed about how much you guys know, are some of you extreme fanatics or are most of you full blown scientist types.

I'm really interested in learning more about mushrooms not just the ones containing psilocybe, where would be a good place to start, do any of you guys have any recomended websites or books?

thanks
SneakNZ

All of the years and time spent out there in the woods studying random wild life (even plant and insect life) - I can't even begin to try and keep track of it anymore.

Hi Guys,

i've got another load for you too check out, found whilst moving house in some wood chips in a small council planted patch next to the road... I think they might be gold tops but i'm not convinced because of the dark gill colour - these are a little dry now, but they where pretty dark when picking, although some of the smaller ones did have white gills, they dont stain blue either, but i friend of mine is pretty sure they'll active - i don't belive them

anyway here you go:

It's a good thing you don't believe him!

Gold Tops (Psilocybe cubensis) grow in cow manure and there is no mistaking thier blue bruising. They also have brownish-gray gills and dark purple spore-print.

That is not them. Those ones are obviously bruising a brownish red colour and are possibly toxic. I'll leave it to the resident experts here to give you an exact ID, but in the meantime definitely do not eat them!

I was also a little concerned that you said in your second post "those ugly ones are pretty odd and tempting looking, i'll post a report if i take them" ... you could be posting a report from a hospital bed or even worse not posting a report at all. Don't eat random mushrooms!!  :crazy2:

Wombat here in NZ the common local term of "goldtops" normally referrs to Psilocybe subaeruginosa.

Dude I'm not sure whether they are subs or not - I dont think they are. Some of the specimens look kinda like the subs that I've seen, but I think they are a look alikes.
Was there any blue bruising anywhere on any of them? The gills look wrong and they seem quite orange.

I wouldn't eat them. I think I have seen that same species around, they just dont have that stand out subby look, and without any evidence of blue bruising (the subs I've found have blued on the stem when I found them!) I'd conclude that they are probably poisonous.

Gidday Sneak
I've gathered mushrooms like that from woodchipped Wellington plots and they didn't go blue and were too dark orange. Quite pretty fellows but I biffed them out. I'd be keen to hear if someone can put a name to them because I've come across them more and more and its goood to know about the "aren'ts" just as much as the "ares"

Hey Sneak and Feelers.....once again you've found another type of mushromm in the same group as your first pics.....this one Hypholoma (Naematoloma) aurantiaca......they also have the same spore color and are in the same family (Strophariaceae) as "SUBs"......this one not 'active' and edibility unknown (therefore assume deadly!)

Your first pics at top on the original I.D. have accounted for several deaths in Europe

Yes well as usual you kiwis are wrong. Just kidding. But seriously, that would only be because there are no Psilocybe cubensis growing in NZ (are there?) and the name carried over just as a nickname for "magic mushroom".

And those are definitely not subaeruginosa. You can see immediately they are brusing a rusty colour and to me they just don't look the same anyway. Better luck next time!  :frown:
