One of my best friends died
    #5527371 - 04/17/06 10:34 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

3:00am Sunday morning...

my best friend from high school. charles. i hadn't talked with him until a couple months ago. we had plans to get together a couple weeks ago and something came up.

he was drinking with his brother and friends saturday night. they got really really drunk, and decided to swim a pond that bordered his apartment complex.

a guy that was swimming ahead of charles looked back... and he was gone.

they looked for him with the cops, and couldn't find him.

they found his body floating sunday morning.

we were supposed to hang out next weekend.

Having lost a best friend and a couple of good friends, all to cancer, I know how incredibly hard it can be. Nothing I can say carries much weight in this context but regardless, I hope you're doing okay and would be willing to listen to anything you might like to say, here or in PM's or whatever.

Here is an excerpt from Philip K. Dick's Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said, as posted by OMR:

"I remember once when I first smoked pot from a waterpipe rather than a joint. It, the smoke, was cool, and I didn't realize how much I had inhaled. All of a sudden I died. For a little instant, but several seconds long. The world, every sensation, including even the awareness of my own body, of even having a body, faded out. And it didn't like leave me in isolation in the usual sense because when you're alone in the usual sense you still have sense data coming in even if it's only from your own body. But even the darkness went away. Everything just ceased. Silence. Nothing. Alone...

...Anyhow, it wasn't like fainting; I didn't feel I was going to fall, because I had nothing to fall with, no body . . . and there was no down to fall toward. Everything, including myself, just expired. Like the last drop out of the bottle. And then, presently, they rolled the film again. The feature we call reality."

"Were you frightened about it?"

She nodded. "Consciouness of unconsciousness, if you dig what I mean. When we do die we won't feel it because that's what dying is, the loss of all that. So, for example, I'm not at all scared of dying anymore, not after that pot bad trip. But to grieve; it's to die and be alive at the same time. The most absolute, overpowering experience you can feel, therefore. Sometimes I swear we weren't constructed to go through such a thing; it's too much - your body damn near self-destructs with all that heaving and surging. But I want to feel grief. To have tears."

"Why?" He couldn't grasp it; to him it was something to be avoided. When you felt that you got the hell out fast.

"Grief reunites you with what you've lost. It's a merging; you go with the loved thing or person that's going away. In some fashion you split with yourself and accompany it, go part of the way with it on its journey. You follow it as far as you can go."

I feel for your loss.

Death is a part of life, and everyones got to go sometime. The sad part is none of us know when sometime is going to come. The happy part is that we dont have to fear it. Inside all of us lies the truth, however we may not be able to remember it. However I believe that after this life, we will RETURN to that place of truth, where there will no longer be desire, and your essential being will be completly fulfilled.

Your friend now knows complete fulfillment. We shouldnt grieve the loss of him, but rather celebrate his life knowing that although hes no longer with us on earth, he soul lives.

When my time comes, Id rather people throw a kegger than a funeral.

my condolences man.

My friends and I lost someone Sunday too. There's a dozen of us that ride (motorcycles) together, friends from high school and whatnot. A few of them were out sunday afternoon, and one didn't make it back. He was 21.

I've seen a lot of this the past few years: people dying young, kids I knew and chilled with suddenly gone. I haven't lost a best friend but I know the ones that have, I've seen the grief. I empathize as much as I can with you, and I wish nothing more than for you to find your peace with all this.

I wrote an older, wiser friend of mine about Sunday's events, and this is part of what she wrote back:

"...Meanwhile, we mourn the losses. It is our job to remember the people who leave and to remember the stuff we learn from them while they're here. Aside from that, we are singularly powerless. I think that's a good thing. As long as you can hear them in the back of your head, they stay with you. And as long as they have loosed this mortal coil, they remain as they were when we had them with us.... Remember the good stuff and the valuable stuff. Leave aside the stupidity and the meanness, and get on with your life. Remind yourself occasionally that someday, you will also be the voice in the back of someone's head and make sure what they will hear from you there is of value. Beyond that, be gentle with yourself and secure in the knowledge that you can't hold everyone in the palm of your hand...however much you may want to."

take care.

Sucks man!

He should have remebered that thing about getting cramps.

We all been there in one way or another......

Teddy sniffing glue he was 12 years old
Fell from the roof on East Two-nine
Cathy was 11 when she pulled the plug
On 26 reds and a bottle of wine
Bobby got leukemia, 14 years old
He looked like 65 when he died
He was a friend of mine

Refrain:
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died

G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten
So they died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan
Sly in Vietnam took a bullet in the head
Bobby OD'd on Drano on the night that he was wed
They were two more friends of mine
Two more friends that died / I miss 'em--they died

Repeat Refrain

Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room
Bobby hung himself from a cell in the tombs
Judy jumped in front of a subway train
Eddie got slit in the jugular vein
And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others,
And I salute you brother/ This song is for you my brother

Repeat Refrain

Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys' Club roof
Tony thought that his rage was just some goof
But Herbie sure gave Tony some bitchen proof
"Hey," Herbie said, "Tony, can you fly?"
But Tony couldn't fly . . . Tony died

Repeat Refrain:

Brian got busted on a narco rap
He beat the rap by rattin' on some bikers
He said, hey, I know it's dangerous,
but it sure beats Riker's
But the next day he got offed
by the very same bikers

Charles probably had a few things going against him.

First, he had low bodyfat, which makes it a bitch to swim and causes you to get colder and less functional more quickly (especially after drinking alcohol, which depresses your system). Plus, it's way harder to stay afloat without fat to keep you up.

Secondly, he was black. No offense, but the % of black people that have poor coordination in the water is very high.

Thirdly, he was probably your average joe schmoe who has poor cardio-vascular health under stressful conditions due to lack of exercise.

Sorry if I seem like an asshole from this post for making assumptions, but this is all I could think about. These are the considerations I would think about before jumping into cold water for a long swim.

Probably true....But I don't think he's looking for reasons why he died, more along the lines of support and understanding.
