From what I've heard, it pretty much just freezes up your body. You still think and trip, but you can't move.

It's a potent sedative/hypnotic. The drug is mainly used for the abortion of severe psychiatric emergencies where physical restraint is not enough to subdue someone. Thorazine is one of the earlier anti-psychotic medications to be used and is useful in combating psychotic symptoms in people with such disorders. Similarly, "bad trips" have occasionally been brought to a halt using thorazine to tranquilize the patient, however this is often considered to be a poor way to end a trip as people often report that it does nothing to help make them feel better, it simply sedates them so that they aren't as freaked out. Some speculate that this can have severe consequences as the person is not allowed to work through their problems that are at the root of the bad trip, and thus can leave things unfinished. More recently, people have found the use of Benzodiazipines such as Valium to be superior in the treatment of these symptoms as the person is allowed to finish out their trip, albiet with the frightening dellusions and hallucinations dulled because of the medication.

As far as recreational use of thorazine, I would HIGHLY discourage it. Not only is it not fun whatsoever, (people often liken it to feeling like their body weighs 1000 pounds and they can't do much but lie down), it can have very severe side effects even from occasional use. Primarily, one can be concearned with tremors, shakes, dystonic reactions, tardive dyskenisia and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Most of these have to do with involuntary, repetative movements by hands and legs, malformation of the face and joints and other problems associated with the disruption of dopamine in the brain.

In other words, STAY AWAY from this stuff, it is NOT good news and it is certainly NOT FUN.

-Dan

What I meant to say, is that if you take it to halt a bad trip, it will only knock your body out, not your mind.
