Alright im taking this mushroom, molds and mildews class for college and i just got assigned this paper and essentially it says a guy gets arrested comming back into the U.S. from canada cuz he has a small bag of dried mushrooms, sussequent analysis reveals they contain a controlled substance. he claims they where good edibles and he planned to cook them up for dinner. and im asked "is it likely that someone would mistakenly pick magic mushroms, thinking they were good edibles?
basicly i have a few ideas:
at erowid it lists that Amanita velosa Amanita caesaria and Amanita rubescens as edible look alikes (http://www.erowid.org/plants/amanitas/amanitas_images.shtml)
im assuming they mean look alike to fly ageric but i was under the impression that is active ingrediants were not illegal to possses.
does anybody know of edibles that bruise blue that are not hallucinogenic?
any help would be appreciated. also i dont have to actually prove the man is innocent, since the mushrooms he found where dried and he had a small amount and if he was picking that day i would think it would be rare that they would dry out so quick.

there are a few edible boletes that bruise blue I think.
but they have pores under the cap rather than gills.
most edible mushrooms are large. compared to psilocybes, which are generally small, drab fungi that are not distinctive to anyone who is not knowledgable of their characteristics. they also grow in different habitats than most edible hunters would search. I'd say no, it's not likely to pick them thinking they're edible (as in non-active). maybe gymnopilus species could be mistaken for edibles more easily, but that's also not very likely, IMO.

There are reports of gyms, pan subbs and other pans being mistakenly eaten as edible. The only small dried mushroom that is commonly eaten as an edible that I can think of is Marasmius oreades (Fairy Ring Mushroom). It doesn't blue but it is small and should look somewhat like a baggie of liberty caps (complete with bits of grass) after being dried. http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/mar2003.html

I would say yea it is likely sombody could pick magic mushrooms because they thought they were edible. I mean people pick Deadly mushrooms thinking there edible then they die so there could be sombody who would pick magic mushrooms thinking there edible.

I remember reading somewhere about subbalteatus causing a surprise intoxication among a group of people who were trying to eat an edible agaricus species or something.

Speaking in terms of general inactive mushrooms (that are not necessarily all edible) there are some inactive gilled mushrooms that can be colored in shades of blue or develop some shades of blue. This is something that some seem to not realize. Gilled blue bruising inactive mushrooms are not really too common IME though.
One of the only pictures that I have illustrating this is this Lactarius specimen that I find under pine trees in the late summer through fall, noticed blue tinges from the milky latex, which makes it look like it's bruised blue.. This species is inactive though:

Also this gilled bolete specimen has gills but bruises blue and is inactive:

The bluing on the gills is not really too obvious in the photo, but it got much more blue after the photo was taken.
Also a lot of the blue bruising boletes can be poisonous.. not ALL are, but they shouldn't be eaten either way due to the possible risk.

On this board Coprinus sp. are often mistaken for P. semilanceata. It isn?t too outlandish to think the reverse scenario is a remote possibility among unwitting mushroom foragers. georgem

I agree. The fact that he was coming from Canada eliminates the possiblity that he picked Cubensis thinking they were some coprophilic edible.
A complete newbie might mistake Psilocybe cyanescens for Flammulina velutipes.
