I've been convicted for leaving the scene of an accident and it was not a big deal at all.
My situation was a little different though....
I was blackout drunk and driving for some unknown reason, I definitely hadn't planned on it and had parked my car literally a mile away so i wouldn't even be tempted, but apparently I stumbled my way to my car and tried to drive somewhere.
long story short, I wake up in a lawyers yard ACROSS THE STREET FROM A POLICE STATION, with a totaled car and absolutely no idea how I got there. So I get out, lock the door, and walk to my buddies house to sleep off the booze. I get a call the next morning from the cops, I told them I would turn myself in, but not without first contacting my lawyer, three days pass, I finally sit down with a detective and tell him I left because It was early in the morning and since there were no other cars involved I though it could wait.
Every single cop I talked too knew I was drunk, but they couldn't prove it, the judge asked if I had been drinking at the hearing and I pleaded the fifth I was convicted for leaving the scene and got one day of traffic school plus the cost of court costs and damages to the yard, no jail time.
I was extremely lucky, thankfully I didn't hit anyone else, I never drink and drive and don't know why I did that night, now I hide my keys in case I get anymore ideas.

It's only a felony if you kill or injure someone, if you hit a parked car its a non criminal traffic infraction.

go back tomorrow when your not tripping... tell them in person or leave a note apologizing for the damage. Also explain that you were in a rush or had an emergancy... i think they will be pissed but it shows that you didnt just flee.. If this happened to me, i would be pissed but also happy that you actually came back. hopefully they will be happy that you did the right thing.. Have a fun trip dude. now isnt the time to worry about the situation.

You story makes much more sence, if you situation happened to me, I would have done the same thing. But I would never leave after hitting someones vehicle for any other reason.

One time, I was in boston and I was pulling out of a parking space and I managed to whack the car in front of me. I felt really bad but fear simply took over and I drove off. I got up about 2 sets of lights and someone runs up to my car and is like, I got your license plate! You're in trouble buddy!
I got really scared and later went back but couldn't find the car so I just left. Nothing ever happened...but sometimes our fear instincts take over and we do irrational things. Thank god nothing ever happened, but I still felt like a dick. There really wasn't any damage to the person's car either, all that happened was my front headlight nailed his bumper (there was a pothole strategically placed right near his car.)
