Actives in NY are pretty rare. If you look up species names (that occur in NY) and search for them, you should find out the best times to look.. which are probably spring through fall, I'm south of NY. Might be best off searching for panaeolus subbalteatus. Liberty caps are sometimes listed as supposedly growing there, but I never see or hear form anyone who actually finds them there. Could be some kind of rarity or mistake, :justdontknow:.

Yeah, I've done that too with hay, but it seems like usually it's that coprinus species that seems to be one of the most common hay mushrooms. Subbalteatus can be found in hay sometimes.
