Ok I know that a sour smell usally means the jar is contaminated but!!!!!!! I add water to my jars at times and some have produced an oder sorta muskey earthy smell maybee a little pungent but I let the jars grow and by the time the jar completly colonized the smell was gone no contams nothing the smell was just that of rice mush and verm that was damp when the mycelium covered it the shroomey sent took over I even cut one of the cakes apart to find it was contam free on the inside too soo if it smells a little strange but looks good it probly is. The jars with contams stop growing or grow very slowly so smell is a warning sign of a potential problem but may not be unless followed by stunted groth and so on any feedback?

true dat. You should just throw the contaminated jars out though...Unless you just want to seperate them from the uncontaminated jars and cakes and just make prints...

>Unless you just want to seperate them from the >uncontaminated jars and cakes and just make prints... That?s not a good strategy. If you make a print from a mushroom that is growing from a contaminated, moldy cake, chances are great that you will have many of those mold spores on your mushroom and then on the print. So, dump contaminated cakes out without thinking twice.

Two very important advice: 1. DO NOT "SNORT" contaminated jars. Waft the smell to your face like your learnt in Grade 8 science. 2. DO NOT RISK eating shrooms from a contaminated. A trip, few mushrooms, and a little bit of your time is not worth your life.
