Social Cause
    #5521874 - 04/16/06 05:34 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I feel like I need to support something and really care about a specific cause. The world needs more people who care about a cause and contribute to helping it. What kind of social causes do you support?

This seems to kind of defeat the whole purpose. When you care about something, you care about it. You don't wake up one day and say "Hmm, what do I want to care about?"

I don't really know if it's a social cause, but my biggest concern is for the environment. I do whatever I can to help it, and try to spread the word to others.

Like the previous poster said though, you actually need to have a vested interest in whatever cause you choose to support. You shouldn't need someone to tell you what it is.

Sometimes your energy needs direction. So when someone wakes up in the morning and says "hmm what do i want to write?" then writes your favorite song, does it make it any less cathartic or passionate?

ipickPA, I understand where you're coming from, I have a lot of things I feel strongly about but it came from reading books and conversation and analyzing myself and my family.

perhaps you should look at your family and yourself and try to see how you may be hurting something or someone, then RIGHT THERE is where you should start. You are an extension of your family. And really take a look at your family, don't just look at the sky and say "well we never hurt anybody" because everyone hurts something or someone somewhere along the line.

You are a human, a unit of society. You make your own cause!

Everything Ive ever fought for has stemmed from beliefs my family has. Where do you think you've gone wrong? Where is change necessary? Start with yourself then branch out trying to reach others.

perhaps If you want to find something you think is worth fighting for, go out and meet the populace, meet the people who are fighting and get there views. Go to the library or a book store and just browse around for a bit, make your own path and read a few things until you find something interesting to you, though you may be overlooking what is right in your own home, right in your own little society.

The environment is osmething I care deeply about and think others should care deeply about as well.  If you live in a city, go have an experience in the outdoors for awhile to realise how important and magnificent it is...

If you live in the country, go to the city to remind yourself about the road humanity is heading on, a road of envonmental destruction (dun dun DUNNNN!!!)

I think urban dwellers can be just as, if not more, environmentally-sound than those out in rural lands. out in the city, I can ride my bike everywhere, I have zero need for an automobile, I have a wide selection of organic grocers and organic co-ops that offer vegetable/fruit seasonal subscriptions...plus there are plenty of activism to join in - literally hundreds of organizations all within the city limits.

i was half way joking   (the duns? anyone? funny? awww)

I live in the city too (Phoenix) which is a very non-environmental friendly place in my eyes.  I have stayed in many other cities on the east coast in particular where there is a definate change in cultural atmosphere, however in my city it is an atmosphere of environmental exploitation as far as Im concerned.  Phoenix is not a happy place for environmentalists, Though we are appeased occasionally.

I agree...but I do live in Portland.  If cities just stopped sprawling and expanding and worked towards becoming way more efficient and dense, they could all be very eco-friendly places to live. The biggest problem I think is unchecked population growth - there's a good cause to work for.

thats a noble cause, but the power of spring is in the air.

I totally agree, yet I have children   but its not something I understood before having my kids... The scope of the human breeding probem that is.

I just...I don't know. I care about alot of things. Simply not enough to invest my time in all of them though. I was just wondering what some of you cared about. I care about the environment but at the same time I feel like that gets alot of help...where something else might not be getting any help at all.

Oh, and I would like to add, yes I woke up this morning a bit hung over from the night before....and I was just like..damn...I really don't do anything except for myself. I mean im not some selfish ass hole or anything like that. But, I would like to think I could help out a cause that is bigger than anything I could ever be.

I suppose I feel like I consume consume consume but I never give back too much?

anywhos Im going to think about it..do some research..thanks guys

It's preposterous to tell a human being to stop breeding.

You say to stop adding numbers to our population, and to organize against
something that limits population.

Huh? I said that unchecked population growth is a very large problem and  a good cause would be to help work towards raising awareness about that or something. Not to organize against something that limits population.

6,000,000,000 people is well over the world's carrying capacity. We can't support the 3,000,000,000 more people that it's estimated we'll have before the world population stabilizes.
