Why Cut off Tops?

I was reading the faq in another thread and it said you should cut the tops off of the mushrooms that are growing faster to prevent it from releasing spores. Why does it matter if it releases spores?

I don't know about cutting off tops. But when they release spores, it makes a mess and some people think that the spores inhibit further flushes.

They probably clog the surface of the casing layer. Plus tons of spores cause a mess in your FC.

no no no...
it doesn't have anything to do with the spores. The idea of cutting the top off is so that the bigger mushroom doesn't grow and you give the smaller ones a chance to get bigger before you harvest. That way the bigger, more mature ones don't over-ripen...

You could just pull the big ones, or cut it off, when it gets to a decent size, then it'll stop pulling nutes and leave the others alone.

Spores just make a mess, they dont really create too much of a problem in your grow.
People cut the caps off of mushrooms to halt the growth, and/or, print the cap. As stated before this allows the slower mushrooms to catch up without damaging surrounding mushrooms or mycellium. If done in time this usually prevents a heavy spore deposit in your fruiting chamber.

Soooo....will the caps grow back? If not then why wouldn't you just pick the whole mushroom as opposed to just the cap? If you want to *stop* the growth of larger ones a sure fire way would to be to completely take it out. Or does this process just slow the growth so you'll still have large stems(with no caps?) Sorry for the noob q's but I still have alot that I need to learn to perfect this art.

if you rip out the full shroom you damage the myc network which can piss off the mushrooms around it. slow growth or stop it.

cutting the cap off effectively "kills" the mushroom. You dont want to leave capless stems on your casing for more then a day or two, otherwise you run the risk of rot and contamination.

Err Stamets*
But yeah, Some people just cut the tops off to stop the growth whereas if you pick the whole mushroom it tears the mycelium.
Err..Which everything is stated above.

You can take whole mushrooms as they're ready by cutting the stem with a knife just above the casing layer. This avoids damage to the pins around it. Remove the 'stump' when you pick the rest of the flush. I never cut off just the cap and leave the stipe standing. RR
