green mold and stalled jars
    #5521504 - 04/16/06 03:53 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

About a week ago I shook some partially (maybe 50%) colonized millet jars and afterwards in one jar I noticed 2 different kernels of millet which appear to be colonized by green mold. I have continued to incubate this jar and the mold doesn't spread nor has any mycelium recovered and started to grow since I shook the jar. Why isn't the mycelium growing? Why hasn't the mold spread? Not that I need this jar, but is a jar automatically destroyed when it is contaminated, just curious? I also wonder what would have happened if I had never shook the jar and seen the contamination. Some of the other jar I shook either have not recovered or are very slowly recovering from the shake. Any insight?

Normally when you shake a grain jar and it doesn't recover, the problem is bacteria. You can probably smell it through the filter. At any rate, if it didn't recover after shaking for a week, it isn't going to. See if the grain stinks when you dump it out.

Some of the other jars I shook have recovered but seem to be growing slow. So far it seems to me that shaking other than the first time after inoculation isn't beneficial. I haven't been able to smell anything through the filters. What would have happened if I hadn't shook the jar to notice the mold? Could the jar have produced harmful mushrooms?
