waiting for pins...question in the meantime

I have 3 casings in the martha chamber. Two of them have been overtaken by the myc (about 1/3 of the surface covered with a very light layer of casing). My question is when pins start to form should I put another thin layer of patching over the myc? I thought the casing is for protection...how can it protect if it has been turned into myc?
