Peyote one year with no water///UPDATE:I think I have the master plan chk this out
    #5521026 - 04/16/06 01:32 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I'm going to be going to school pretty soon. If I just leave my peyote sitting in a window with light for a year with no care and no water will they live? I know they can go 4 months and the sides just start to suck in a little. I plan on watering them really well and getting them bloated with water before i leave. What are some fancy tricks i could pull that would like give them a watering once a month or something. I don't trust anyone to care for them for me i would rather take the chance of them making it on there own.

Here they are.

UPDATE: OK I think I know what to do. I'm going to take a electric solenoid valve and install it directly into my water line. I need an on/off timer that will actuate my solenoid for 5 seconds once a month for a year. :stoned: :stoned: :stoned:

Does this on/off timer exist?

If you get it bloated with water, wont it just rot?

It could die of necrosis but i know the perfect amount of bloatedness to get them before that happens. You can slowly acclimate a peyote to take on more water than it should but it makes them shaped all fucked up.

Also if you over fertilize and water a peyote it can bloat up and split open.

i think once a year is too little.
when you don't give water enough to a cactus for it to die nor thrieve, it shrinks and that's ugly and non healthy for the plant...

Yeah, even in nature, a year without rain is something that's not too often heard of.

seriously, i would take care, not eat them.
i have already tried not to water a cactus, it was a poor (rare) discocactus and it shrunk like he went 3 years into the past in terms of size... not to say it looked ugly. it never came back to its full size.
actually i would as well not trust a normal person for taking care of my babies... no greenthumbs around?

Someone I know has a peyote that was sealed in a black, plastic bag and left in the refrigerator for 9 months.
They unwraped it and put it on a shelf to warm. He said he moved it to a sunny window after a few days.

Nobody has posted the easy answer yet!

Get a big bucket, or bowl, or similar, and fill it with water.  Stick a wick of sorts into one of the sides of the pot, and lead it into the bucket.  Capillary action gets water to the roots as the soil dries up.

Even if all the water dries up out of the bucket, you'll still get a few months of watering in.

Yea, I was thinking about mentioning something similar, but I figured that it would not last too long. But you have an excellent point, it won't last a year, but it will definately help ease the strain on the plant, by postponing the "drought".

If you have someone you at least trust to know you have peyote, then prepare the correct amount of water for each feeding, and tell them when to feed it. Kepp them where you have them at now and just do that. Thats the only thing I could think of. :/

the bucket and wick idea is good. it wouldnt constantly soak the soil, in fact it would make the soil barely wet around the area the wick went into the soil. use a bucket with a lid and make a small hole to put the wick thru. this way you lose less water through evaporation. use a 5 gallon bucket and i doubt it would all run out in a year.

only big problem i could see is a fungal or bacterial infection growing in the stagnant water, which could wick its way to the roots of your cacti.

ehhh you can forget that, the soil will be soaked till the bucket is empty.

i tried it and what happens is that the soil itself simply starts acting like a wick too.
would be good for swamp plants, but certain death to any succulent.

Im not doing that to my peyote man, they cant handle constant water.

how big would this outlet be? 5 seconds seems a bit much unless its potted in a 10" or 12" pot.
i've seen 30 day timers in some hardware stores, cept i dont know if they have seconds for the timing period. i'm sure there are electric timers (meaning it has a lcd screen and buttons to set the time, instead of the turn knob type shit) that you could set for a few seconds.
if all else fails try to make one out of radio shack parts.
over on OverGrow some guy made a timer for 3 secs on every 6 hrs from parts at RadioShack for his co2 enrichment, i'm sure you could easily modify his technique to do 3-5 secs every 30 days.

remember to not let the valve open all the way because the water pressure would be full force if connected to the waterline in your house.

best bet would be to let someone care for it, cuz there's always the chance the timer could fuck up, or flood your room and the plant or the valve might break and it wouldnt get water.

find someone who you could trust to give it the TLC it needs.

5 seconds wouldnt be too much. The valve would be uh 3/4 inch the same size as my water pipes (i think). I like to completely water them like once a month or every two weeks if its been really hot or theyve been getting lots of light.

Im thinking i may just take my chances and tell a friend to give them 1 cup of water once a month and hope he dosnt fuck that up (yeah my friends arnt very responsible or intelligent)

I guess i can always have my mom do it lol.

You can find self-watering pots at your local garden shop. I have one which I use for my passiflora, I do not know how it would work with cactii though. Don't abandon your babies, let someone sit them for you.
