Differences between proper night clubs and cheesy uptown venues...

I dont know how its in the US but here in UK what annoys me most about cheesey clubs is their choice of music - same "classics" played over and over again week after week year after year. Coming to a towny club on a staurday is the same experience every saturday for some reason.
But the biggest difference comes in vibe. If anyone been to a proper night club before must have felt that theres a strong vibe going on and atmoshpere you can feel it especially if everyone is rolling. If you look at the dance floor there you will find main difference: in proper clubs everyone is sort of positioned around the DJ booth on the dance floor, as in cheesy clubs everyone sort of dance (if you can call it dancing) in small groups of friends. Do you see what i mean?
The biggest cock comes standing when you try a different music policy in a cheese club, for instance i thought today of an experiment if you tried to tunr of cheese music in the middle of the night and play something trancy or techno, the dance floor would be empty in a few mintues and THEN providing there some proper clubbers present dancefloor would be refilled and new form would appear with people poositioning themselves to face DJ booth. Thats my guess.

I find cheese is ok if you're pissed.. otherwise it's just shit.
Most of the student clubs and bars around here play the same rubbish every week - sometimes they don't even change the order. Everyone always seems to be having a good time though, so can't complain really.

Generally speaking, I am either more of a
a: Small-party type person b: Proper after-hours
The smaller-parties tend to be the music-heads who love the tunes, and tends to have an 'everyone here knows everyone else here' kind of vibe. They are very rarely packed to the tits, but they are all there for the music, and its not a meat-market vibe. They tend to close up shortly after last-call, but still good times all around.
Or, a proper-after hours. In which case, I will rarely even show up before 2am, as I dont like drinking crowds and the meat-market vibe. My 'ideal' time of night if out at a club (this depends on the club of course), is typically around 5am -- the drinkers are long gone, the light weights are long gone, and its just the hard-heads, music fans, and really high people left, dancing their asses off like their lives depended on it, the music is better (even when I'm sober, so its not just the drugs, I've closed a club sober many times).
I love it when I go out to a club, and 90% of the music I have /never/ heard before and it's new to me. I love going out and being supprised by what I hear, hearing new tracks, hearing new genres - I hate hearing the same over-played trash time after time I go out.
My favorite clubs would have to be Stereo in Montreal, and many nights I wouldnt even get to the club till 4-5am (the vibe at 6am is AMAZING), or old boa in Toronto (before it moved locations and started to suck).
The normal 'top-40' type clubs just play poppy/cheezy stuff, meat-market vibe, to many people out looking to pick up, to many drunk people that are way too aggressive/pushy.

All the clubs we have in York are wank, i used to go to one for about 2 years religiously, it was like i felt at home there. I was always one for sitting and just taking it all in !. but they closed that club down and i could never get settled anywhere else.
Tall Trees was a good club ( near middlesbrough ), but you need to be on a death wish to get there and back cos it was in the middle of nowhere, and we always used to drive. Was worth it though because it cost 15 pound ( about 25 US dollars ) to get in and your drinks were free all night, Sweet !.
