HELP: Grateful Dead

Hey guys, wasn't too sure whether I should post this in the pub or not... so I'll just put it here. I've recently been getting into the Grateful Dead a lot, and there style varies so much that it's impossible to class them. I'm pretty young (18) and my friends all think I'm a complete whacko because all I ever listen to is psychedelic music (shpongle, shulman, infected mushroom, grateful dead, phish, acid trance etc etc)... but I love this music because it just brings back floods of memories from old trips and helps keep me in my right state of mind.
I really REALLY love the song "Estimated Prophet" (Grateful Dead..) and I was wondering if anyone could help me out in finding GD songs that are similar or go by the same style as this? I can't get it out of my head... I love their other stuff too, but would like to find more that has this sort of style to it...
thanks in advance for any help.

One great thing about the Dead is that they play different songs every show, and they play those songs slightly differently each time too.
They played Estimated Prophet almost 400 times in their 30 year run. Lately I've been listening to this version a lot

"Estimated" is one of those tunes that has sort of a reggae verse, rock chorus, and jazzy outro; great tune, always a cool end jam when seen live. It's a Bob Weir number, so you prolly will dig his stuff. I would check out "Lost Sailor," "Saint of Circumstances," "Weather Report>Let It Grow," "Cassidy," "Feel Like a Stranger," "Lazy Lightning>Supplication Jam," etc. I would focus on the mid '70s on for that kind of sound. But I am always excited to hear that young people are into the Dead. And, as a matter of fact, all the Dead's stuff is great music--but get the live stuff before any studio; studio Dead does not represent the band very well. Peace.

They did alot of songs like that during the arista years. They have a great collection on cd called the arista years(arista records). 80's (studio)dead was always really unique. Some dont like it much, and I have no idea why. The song you mentioned fits right in there though. Estimated Prophet is definately in my top three favorites during those years.
China cat sun flower was always one of my favs. The jam is incredible every time, and the sound is like a sunny day, high as a kite in the middle of some secluded field. ABout as trippy as they get.
I know alot of dead fans like myself have many many live tapes. If it is hard for you to get live tapes from any point in the deads history, there are two albums that should start you off nicely, (if you dont have them already).
Europe 72' and Without a Net -----------------> they are really great live double disks.
If you are into phish, I have a pretty good idea what live cd's you should go out and buy RIGHT NOW. 6/14/00, Fukuoka Japan. Its in their recently released live collection. It is the most out there show I have ever heard. They made magic that night, and they thanked the quiet and attentive audience for allowing that to happen. Less rock, more grooves and extreemely long jams. Alien music.............
Also, Live at Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve 1995 [LIVE] Amazing show, and they hit the mark with every note, every intention fulfilled. A little more rock, and not as groovy/funky/trippy. When they do get more jammed out and mathematical, its phish in top form. I would buy it just for the elongated "Reba" jam, possibly my favorite thing I have ever heard. It just brings me back to the first time I heard it, and can almost bring me to tears(to be honest I am a musician, and it has brought me to tears). Ya I am refering to the jam of the "bag it, tag it" song beleive it or not. This "95' jam" is so alien and 3-dimentional that you can almost touch it. They are not conveying normal human emotion, and thats probably why it hits home so hard for me, and is also why I consider it the trippiest thing I have ever heard.

Didn't see anyone mention Turn on Your Lovelight... may I recommend 5/15/70 (Fillmore East- Late Show)
And if I could only give one recommendation for Phish I'd have to say the 8/13/96 Divided Sky is rather transcendent
Both Phish and the Dead have changed my life for the better- just PM me if you need any shows/songs- same goes for everyone, I will send Phish and Dead shows to anyone Shroomerite... all I ask for in return is a smile.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how often the dead were on acid when they played?

I'd say a good two decades at least.

Interesting, but I was actually wondering about per show: would you say during the two decades they played while tripping they were tripping at 75% of the shows? 90%? 30%?
it must have been a little strange for them to not be tripping at a concert later on when they stopped.

I'd say initially it would have been 90% of the time or higher and then it probably became less and less frequent as time went on. It's also pretty clear that they're trippin when listening to a show from the late 60's or early 70's. The style of Jerry's guitar cleverly mimics what one would already expect to here when under the influence of LSD.

That would be pretty intense...
That also leads me to wonder if they dosed because they knew they were going to be playing or if their concerts just coincided with their acid dripped lifestyle.

As often as they toured 30% of the time would be overkill. They didnt trip all that often when touring. I would just assume most of the members enjoyed lsd and knew enough to not take it so damn often. These guys were not like some psychedelic soup. They were good musicians. They did take more acid than most bands thats for sure. But what musician would assume that because they play incredible trippy music, would think they were ever tripping 90% of the time, even in the early years? If that was the case, they toured enough to make me think they were ignorant as hell. I dont think thats the case though. Jerry used to see which one of a large group of friends could take the most acid(when it was legal) in one sitting. Thats pretty dumb, and thats well documented and in the words of Jerry (he was quite young when he did that). There is no telling how often that band was on lsd when playing live. They are so good at what they do, I would assume they were smart enough to trip mostly by themselves, or with others but not when playing music.

Thanks heaps guys! I've really been getting into phish a lot more as well. I've got to say that "My Sweet One" is such a kick ass song. I'm going to go for Dark Star, Shakedown Stree, Fire On The Mountain, Eyes Of The World (thanks shobimono, MLBjammer & stemmer & everyone else that suggested). I am yet to trip to this music but I'm looking forward to it immenseley. I love psychedelic music most because every time I close my eyes and listen to it (I often put my mp3 player on when I go to sleep) the music begins to take form and shape and dance in front of my eyes. I can literally see the music in front of me.... it's like the lingering effects of the psychedelics I've taken... it's so nice to fall asleep to. I love it because it knocks me straight out to sleep almost instantly (I wake up and find that I didn't even get past the 3rd song... ) and I always have intensely vivid dreams whenever I fall asleep to (especially) psychedelic music. True craftsmanship! I love it. Once again, thanks for all the replies... it's been a big help!
Thanks, fellow shroomerites!
peace
any more suggestions are welcome!!!

Ya the thread shouldnt end here.
I have a few most absolute must have albums, many, but I might as well narrow them down to one artist for the time being.
3 must have psychedelic albums(they are funk/jazz/tribal)
Herbie hancocks-----> "Head hunters", "Man Child", and "secrets".
In the realm of trippy music these are in a class of their own. A trippy sound means more to me than it would for some, and these grooves are like a freight-train........ VERY ambient, and full of nothing but perpetual flow. Its magic.
Herbie was playing with miles since he was 12 years old.
"MUST HAVE" for sure.

shobimono - that archive website is amazing!
I'm listening to the may 15, 1970 at the fillmore east show right now and it's really great listening to them just chit-chat. The dead would have been a really fun group to hang out with.
Sucks that I don't know who's who from their voices. Who's the real hippy sounding guy? The only time i've heard jerry just talk was in half baked.
Sorry none of my posts have been about specific songs or anything, but I'm just curious about the people.
edit: stemmer I do appreciate their music and abilities, I just thought (I guess wrongly, now) that they were under the influence of LSD quite often. I'm pretty sure back in the acid-test days they *were* on acid most of the time when they played. Maybe not, though.

It is likely that the most hippy sounding guy was jerry. He had a high tone that fluctuated without reason. Very bubbly.......... ON video and sound he is one of the more tripped out people I have ever heard speak. He has a very nasally, high pitched tone and a more nonchalant/whatever type attitude. He will have a quick jam with Grisman that was top notch and say "ya man, that was good fun".
He sounds like an insect that speaks english. BBBBZZZZZ BZZZZZZZZZB HHHRRBISSSSSSSSS YAEEknow?
He sounds like the most content MF on the planet.........
