hppd and auditory hallucinations?

Well I have a friend who thinks he has hppd. Im sure anyone who has done their share of psychadelics has some small form of it no big deal. Well he says he gets auditory hallucinations with it though like an empty house might sound like some people talking in another room. He says thats whats really bothering him. I've never heard of auditory hallucinations persisting makes me think the auditory part isn't hppd. I think it may be from dxm i'm convinced thats what caused my hppd but im pretty sure ive done more dxm than he has and i dont get auditory hallucinations but then again everyones different. If anyone has any comments, experiences, or information your post is much appreciated.

Well, HPPD is pretty broadly defined. Essentially, a symptom of HPPD is anything that the drugs would cause when you're on them, when you haven't taken ANY drugs for a significant period of time (weeks, months). If your friend is still using marijuana, dxm or occasionally psychedelics, he would not get a diagnosis of HPPD.
As for the specific symptom of auditory hallucinations, as long as the diagnosing psychologist believes that the auditory hallucinations were experienced during acute intoxication, then yes, it could be. Visual disturbances are much, much more common in HPPD patients, so yes, auditory hallucinations are not as common, but not unheard of (no pun intended).
If its becoming a problem, don't worry about it too much. Stop all drug use and see if it goes away after a few weeks. If its still persisting, then go see a doctor to try to get an anxiolytic to treat the symptoms as they arise (anti-anxiety meds usually work the best, from what I've seen).
Of course, it is possible that the auditory hallucinations are not HPPD related, but instead due to some acute trauma resulting from drug use or simply psychological in nature... but I don't think anybody on this board could tell that with any degree of confidence.

When I go to sleep some times, I'll sort of fade into a semi dream state thinking about things, and suddenly I'll hear incredibly loud voices which wake me back up. It's happened numerous times, never while i'm walking around awake so it could be a number of things, but since it's only ever occurred after using mushrooms I'd relate it to that.
I recommend not taking any drugs for a while and seeing what happens.

I believe those are called hypnagogic auditory hallucinations. They are common and not related to HPPD.

I know that when I suffered from anxiety, I would hear stuff like people talking. It's because I would often get in a state of fear around people and it began to kindof consume me since I would always consider how wrong I was rather than how I could be right (just focus and be aware). Tell your friend to chill out and relax. I really think that will help him.

Could this be a very important thing; if you type in the words "people talking" and "auditory hallucinations" in google, you will find that many voice hearers believe that other people/neighbours etc are talking about/persecuting them (and this often leads to violence) - before they find out that they are hearing voices. We know that voices can be heard both inside and outside of the head; could it be that the truth is more nuanced, and that the voices can also be heard to emanate from people's lips, passing cars, from MULTIPLE locations outside of the head (in external space). I have been reading some material about delusions of reference in schizophrenia, i.e., the idea that some people have that the t.v. or the radio is talking about them and would like to propose that just as people hear auditory hallucinations internally and externally, for some reason, they may hear auditory hallucinations coming from a t.v or a radio. I suspect that certain areas of the brain that register the spatial location from where a sound emanates is activated when people hear voices from a radio or a t.v. I wonder whether people who think that other people are talking about them also hear voices emanating from the spatial location of the other person/persons. I would like to quote a passage from one of the articles of Ralph Hoffman (Acta Psychiatr Scand, 2006) "Seeing Voices": fused visual/auditory verbal hallucinations reported by three persons with schizophrenia-spectrum disorder" - "A male patient reported AVHs consisting of male and female voices occuring at a rate of 7-10 times per hour. He also reported visualizing lip and mouth movements superimposed on otherwise veridical perceptions of faces of actual persons that were fused with (i.e., matched the verbal content of and occurred in synchrony with) simultaneous AVHs. These fused visual/auditory hallucinations occurred most frequently when the patient was in the presence of his family or other familiar persons, and tended to reinforce the patient's conviction that others in his immediate environment were the source of the 'voices' he heard." I have enclosed an article from Scientific American that shows how barn owls locate sounds in space (Listening with two ears, Scientific american, 2006) There also seems to be some research on the internet on how the human brain locates the spatial location from where sounds emanate. I wonder whether schizophrenia researchers would be able to use scientific techniques to see which regions of the brain are activated when people think that they are hearing voices from the radio or the t.v.

where subjective perception of sounds meets objective perception of sounds
where outer meets inner
here auditory hallucinations exist
if one is not acutely engaged in paying attention in allotting focus to one target stimuli this phenomenon gets mingled with the thoughts in the head which then creates an effect as if gibberish is being spoken
if one then associates this experience with strong emotions, such as a fear that cookie monster is after their cookie jar, then it is likely that their brain, so immersed in the inside listening, will project those sorts of hallucinations upon reality
sometimes when i sleep i will hear nonsense "words" in my head as "thoughts" but I realize they come from my fan and its my brain's way of keeping track of the patterns it makes.

it could be hppd but also schizophrenia if also his way of thinking is impaired.
to me sometimes happens once in a few months when i fall asleep that i hear some voices talking to me. but not during i am awake. in the sleep like state they sometimes go away when i manage to some repeating mantras (has not to be something specific) or when i simply wake up and try to resist the sleep for a few minutes.
your friend should stay away from drugs for a few weeks at least.
