Newb Advice
    #551784 - 02/14/02 07:57 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

I made two serious mistakes in my first attemp to grow. They were based on my (1) extreme retardation and (2) lack of info.

Mistake 1:
I accidently got the wrong goddamn size jars. GET 1/2 JARS FOR YOUR FIRST TIME. I (wrongly) thought I could get away with them. Not only did they grow extremely slow, they got contaminated on top of that.

Mistake 2:
I packed the jars. When adding the mixture of whatever substrate you are using, do not overpack the jars. In fact, next time I try, I will almost simply drop the substrate in there.

I waited for around 2 months for these jars to incoculate. When one of them seemed to be finished, I birthed it to find that the middle wasnt even remotely colonized. This jar was the only one (of 5) that was not contaminated.

My next time around I will not make these mistakes (already bought new jars). I know my first mistake was stupid but the second mistake was because I never really got any warning about this. So consider this a warning to all you newbs.

I wasted a good 30 bucks with these mistakes and I want to make sure no one else makes the same ones.

PS: anyone out there wanna send me a free spore syringe? =)
jk... well kinda

We were all newbies once. Dont worry about it, read the FAQ and enjoy the wonderful world of mushroom cultivation.

We all get contams somewhere along out journey. Isolate the jars from the rest and dont eat and mushrooms grown from a possibly contaminated cake. A few mushrooms is not worth your life. Bleach contaminated jars for 12 hours or so but not much longer because a residue/film may build up. The most important thing is that you cant let contams bring you down.

Most of the teks do warn against packing the substrate, but this is so important that I think the warning should be bold, underlined or somehow given a higher priority than the rest of the teks.

If you use chunky vermiculite it can help in this case, but you should always just drop the substrate into the jar. If you want to even out the substrate just slam the jar on a table.

What size jars did you get? Maybe you can have a go with WBS or Rye using the bigger jars. It's good not to have all your eggs in one basket, and it's also good to experiment with different methods when you're starting out. It's not that much harder than PF Tek. In fact, it's probably just as easy.

As for free spore syringes, I cant help you out. But there is a free spore ring you can check out on here. Also, look at the sponsor forums, I think it's sporeworks that is offering a badass deal.
