These are a species of Coprinus......wouldn't attempt which species without which country known.....and just in case your wondering not "active" but very closely related.....Edit: once again I type too slow and Ihavea responded while I was.......but just wanted to add that there are species that are toxic to many people and can land you in the hospital......Coprinus picaceus is just one example.....this poisoning having nothing to do with a bad reaction which can occur from eating Coprinus species with alcohol..... a reaction caused from the presence of Coprine in these mushrooms which has even been identified in "Shaggy Manes" (Coprinus comatus)......any one who drinks daily should eat with caution......many dont have this reaction.....can though be quite severe.....

Some inky's can be poisonous when mixed with alcohol.

Thanks tons guys, I really appreciate it. Just by interest, what features of this mushroom point out its relation to the "Coprinus" species? Thanks again

Just the general shape really. There's no other mushroom that looks like this species. It's Coprinus micaceus. Very common mushroom in the warmer months. Grow on wood, have sparkly specks on the cap when young, turn to mush when old. Classic C. micaceus. I wouldn't eat them but some do. I've never really liked the taste/texture of any Coprinus mushroom. The added possiblity of sickness when Coprinus + Alcohol is involved further makes me not like the genus as a whole. I like my alcohol

Coprinus is the genus, not the species, in fact there are many species of Coprinus. Based upon appearance it is safe to say with certainty what you have is of the Coprinus genera. Taking a guess I would say either Coprinus atramentarius or C. micaceus... though DNA testing looks to be shuffling things up a bit with regard to names in the Coprinus genus anyway. georgem
