I have recently decided that i would like to try the cultivation of mushrooms. I would just like some help on getting started, so any answers to the following questions would be greatly appreciated.
- Should i buy a mushroom kit (comes with everything i need appearantly for $150 CAD), if not what is the best method to grow?
- How much room do i need? - What type of lighting is required?
- How much yield can i excpect?
Thank you for help

Never buy a mushroom kit ....they are a rip off.
You can buy most of everything for half the price.
Spend a week or so reading all the posts you can.
Start with the PF Tek....that is for beginners.
Then read some Teks......Then read the FAQ section.
Then go out and buy your supplies.
You might want to order a spore syringe now so your not waiting on that til the last minute.
Then when you feel comfortable give the PF Tek a go.
Follow the instructions and you will be successful.
Alter the Tek and you will fail without a prayer.
"How much room do i need?"
Not much.....have an extra closet ?
"What type of lighting is required?"
Not much light.....mushrooms only use light to know which way to grow.
Almost any kind of lighting will do.....I know a peep that uses christmas lights....lolz
"How much yield can i expect?"
Don't make us guess....do you know how many people ask us that question?
The yeild depends on alot of different factors.....mainly how well you do at following dirrections...lolz
Good luck to you!!

Canadian eh? Well I can help you out then, I'm from Ontario, and had some troubles finding certain supplies, and I can offer you alternatives that are available here.
First of all, do the PF Tek, its well known for being reliable, afterall we dont want you bombing the first time and being so discouraged that you quit do we? Hell no.
First you'll need some half pints, which you wont truely find here. Make a trip to Wal Mart, Canadian Tire, or Home Hardware and look for a case of Bernardin 250mL jars (half pints are 236mL, so this is the closest we'll get here, and its pretty damn close). These jars, to put it bluntly, suck. But they'll do the job. They're tapered, but they're also decorated, if you manage to find non decorated jars, by all means tell me where! I hate these, but its all me or any other growing friends of mine have been able to find. That should cost you 10 bucks per dozen.
Grab a big bag of brown rice flour from a local health food store, ask them if its organically grown. If so, great, if not, oh well, it'll have to do. That should cost you 5 bucks tops, and will last you 2-3 batches.
Vermiculite and perlite can both be grabbed while you're at Canadian tire, or any garden store. A 10L bag is like 5 bucks, so for both, 10 bucks more.
If you want a pressure cooker, get one, they're worth it, but not neccessary, I spent 100 bucks on one personally. Make sure it has a pressure guage, I goofed on that. It switches between 10 and 14 psi, which works but isnt great.
For spores, if you want to deal in Canada, try The Spore Lab; www.sporelab.com. ITs 25 Canadian for 3 syringes, that includes shipping.
Now you just follow PF Tek, I think I covered the neccessities already. A few other things you wont find here are Damp Rid (no one seems to know what it is) so use Silica Gel from a craft store (such as Michaels) its cheap and just as effective. And denatured alcohol is not available as well, so just use rubbing alcohol, its cheaper and just as good anyways.
Good luck

Lol, I "friend" of mine bought a kit before he discovered the shroomery,,,,,,it has never been used ( a nice waste of 60 bucks), except for the free insence (probably a two dollar value) that accompanied it. Read these threads, and try and try again, eventually you will get more comfortable with the methods and the jargon.... than read some more! Good luck!
