Agar-Agar and Shroom Cultivation

I just happen to stumble unto a health food store in the next town over and lo!, I saw a small bin of agar-agar. Now...
I understand that you can grow mushroom culture on agar but what I don't understand is the benefit of growing myc in a petri dish on agar as opposed to the other methods that are discussed here more frequently.
Any experience is appreciated. As usual, tia (thanks in advance).

I should have been a bit clearer.
Finding information about how to use agar is fairly straightforward. But since I've never grown before, "whether I'd want to" and "how does it help" is a bit past my ability to comprehend.
To put it another way, does agar make my life easier? Do the various teks I see in these forums make agar a pretty much unnnecessary technique?
The "how" is academic. The "why" is a bit more ethereal to a person who doesn't quite know what the "right questions" are yet. Dig?

No it is much more difficult, until you do it and are good at it, then yes it is absolutely worth it.
I have not yet attempted it, gearing up for though. I think one would benefit from that experience.
And on the grow, being able to clone, isolate and selection of strong mycelium yes worth it, but difficult, mainly in preparing and keeping the contams out.

Oh, I get it. It's analagous to cloning cannabis plants instead of growing them from seed. With a seed you'd have more genetic variation because you'd have parents but with a clone would exhibit all of the original mushroom's traits exactly.
Excellent!
I'm going to look into this peroxide agar tek I've seen floating around.
Thanks Snaggle!
