Humidity question
    #5516598 - 04/14/06 04:54 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

So I'm considering a 4 Tier Greenhouse setup. I want to run an Ultrasonic Humidifier on a timer for humidity and a Cool Mist Humidifier that is on all the time for air exchange. Two questions.

1) How long and how often would you say to leave the Ultra on? Like 10 minutes every hour? every two hours?

2) Are there any good guides with PICTURES about how to hook up the cool mist humidifier to a container?

Thanks in advance!

Ultrasonics are really powerful. Their are alot of factors, so we can't tell you exactly how long. You will have to experiment with that yourself.

You will need a good digital timer for that.

Search for 'martha' for the hookup ideas.

Hey Cappa,

Why isn't someone hooking us up with some kind of control system for these so we don't have to fuck around with timers????

lol thx musher! T

This is where I come in say:

As a matter of fact, someone is doing just that very thing!

Mogur and I are working together, building automation systems, so that this stuff is controlled to a finer degree and the pain in the ass of figuring out timing(which isn't very dymanic) is removed!

We're getting together this weekend to begin physically laying out the circuits.

So don't spend too much on digi timers right now ppl! You won't need them soon!

Shameless, just plain shameless, Cappa. Big grin. So, what're we gonna do when we get booted off the board for a sales pitch in the cultivation forum? J/k, it's Musher's fault, yeah, that's the ticket.

Anyway, twistedlndscapes, I think most people find even the fancy digital timers at the local hardware stores are limited to 14 on/off cycles per day. That is a little thin on frequency, because it forces the ultrasonics to put out too much humidity all at once so it will last until the next on cycle. The best controllers for this are the cyclic timers that allow you to control the on duration time independently from the period between on times. They for example, would allow you to turn on the ultrasonic for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, and therefor avoid the huge humidity fluctuations resulting from a timer that can't cycle frequently.

Now I'm probably wrong, and that's my trademark, but I sure can't find the cyclic timers very cheap at all, this site being a good example. But if you can afford the hundred bucks, it is the way to go.

$100 for a timer isn't bad. They last damn near forever in my experience with them. I wish I could use a cheap light timer like I have in other scenarios but I see why that wouldn't work now. But timers don't really go bad so $100 isn't a bad one time expense. Anyway, one more question for right now. I'm sure I'll have more sooner or later.

QUESTION: http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/7994 at the VERY bottom it has about using excelsior moss in the piping. I've quoted the part I'm talking about below. Anyone ever try this?

"When cool mists were first recommended for tiny mushroom chambers, it was suggested that the output of the cool mist be run through a long garden hose to make sure the mist hits the hose's walls. This was a basic way of demisting the output, but it doesn't work perfectly (some mist makes it out) and it won't work for larger hoses very well at all.

A better way is to use a small amount of some material that will stop the mist but allow the humid air past with almost no back pressure (since cool mist units can't push air). This is a pretty hard material to find, but I found something that works very well, excelsior moss (many craft stores carry it):

This stuff is amazingly resistant to mist yet allows humid air through with very little back pressure. I have been using it in my 1" PVC tube in my own set up for some time now:

I use about the amount of a golf ball in the tube. I don't pack it tight, just tight enough to get the job done. By using this material, the output is mist-free and the water chamber lasts a much longer time than before when I used to eject mist. I don't have to fill the chamber but once every few days even running 24/7."

So no one's tried to moss idea that I posted in the reply right above this one?

Actually, that sounds like a good way to cultivate contaminants inside your hose where you can't see them. A slightly wadded piece of aluminum foil will also restrict the flow without contaminating, but I'm no fan of restricting the output from a coolmist. It always seems to help force moisture into the motor bearings, ruining them. I now use the coomists on a shelf inside the greenhouse, and I've been running the same two for over a year now. 1 minute on, six minutes off gives the perfect humidity with no dripping water. Air exchange is provided by vents/openings in the greenhouse itself. I use two coolmists, but my PVC framed greenhouse is equal to three or four marthas.
