Is it possible for P. subbalteatus to leave toothy veil remnants?
    #5516003 - 04/14/06 01:07 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hello. The patch of subbs I was harvesting decayed into nothing in the heat of the past few days. However, a few yards away, in a more humid environment, I have discovered what appears to be a patch of large specimens. However, although the gill color, stem color/texture and blueing base seem to match, there are toothy veil remnants around the margin of the cap, a la sphinctrinus/campanulatus. Has anyone ever encountered this with subbs?

Ahh... Thanks. Wonder how I overlooked that. Unfortunately I don't have access to a camera at the moment (much to my dismay as the season flourishes). I have to assume that the shrooms are P. retirugis in this case, because the stalk is red/purple, a bit wavy and much too thick to belong to sphinctrinus/campanulatus. The telltale will be in observing the way the caps age, I suppose...

Still wondering... [Re: WordlessNature]

I continue to encounter these mushrooms. Looking at the caps, they resemble campanulatus/retirugis, but the stems are very thick in some instances, gnarly and blueing considerably (in one case more than an inch upwards from the mycelium into the stem)...

if the tooth's are in unison and more than 6 or so it's likely it is a pan cap or other in active pan variety.
However in the local area I have found active pan varieties with at least 5 teeth, which is possibly just mycelium growing on the cap.

Pan. sphinctrinus can occur with QUITE a wavy cap, and thick stipes. Ive encountered large specimines that fit this description. I have pics, but they are on my computer thousands of miles away and i dont fly back for another week
