Electric Blanket
    #5503734 - 04/11/06 02:05 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So I just started up a couple of BRF jars yesterday, and I have them in one of my dresser drawers (which is really the only place I can be sure they won't get any light. Anywho, I have an electric blanket that I'm not really using to sleep with anymore since it's getting warmer, and I was wondering if it would be recommendable to put it in the drawer with the jars, wrap around the jars, or something like that on a low setting. The jars I believe stay at around 75F with the current weather and the way my heater is set up. If I wrap the jars in the blanket, will that allow for enough gas exchange to occur? Also, will it increase the risk of contamination? (I slept with the blanket, I'm sure it's gotten sweat and such on it before).

I don't have a thermometer right now to gauge the exact temp, but I'm pretty sure that having the blanket on a low setting wouldn't put it past the 106F that kills the mycellium. Oh, and this is the P. cube amazonian strain btw.

uh without anyway way to tell teh exact temp don't do it. electric blankets are sketchy as it is but if you can't tell the temp don't so it. leave them at room temp. you are much better off waiting teh extra week then killing your jars and having to start all over. also if you are above optimum temperature conolization speeds rapidally slow down so if you go up past 75 right past the mid 80's its going to take the same time as leaving tehm at room temperature except now you will be wasting energy and risking fire.

edit:
also i read every now and them elec blankets dry out your jars. never used one personally so i can't confim this point but i can see it.

That was my first incubator. What I did was put the blanket under the dresser (provided you have a space). THen I modified, waited, modfied, waited...until I achieved the correct temp. Elec. blakets get HOT. My suggestion would be to MAKE SURE you have a steady temp before even thinking about putting the jars in the drawer. Air spaces and air flow within those spaces make for the best method for reducing temperature. GET A THERMOMETER!!

don't use an electric blanket, one minute it'll be the perfect temp then it'll spike. Very unstable with the blanket just use ambient air temp.

MerchantP is also correct. I was constantly having to adjust. Just use the fish heater tek...it is SOOOOOO much easier. Room temp is fine to. There is nothing like making progress and the BOOM...fry your myc.

Yes, I setup a TIT using the IWON submerisible digital fish heater that magash recommends, and what a huge difference from a electric blanket (very scary fire hazard).  I set the TIT (tub in tub) to 80 and never once did I catch the LED reading below 79 or above 81 that thing is accurate as hell, "ghetto advanced " TIT is definetly the way to go, do a search.

For my incubator, I pretty much use the same setup, except a heating pad (drug store for $20) instead of an electric blanket. I lined my dresser drawer with tin-foil, put the heating pad in and keep it on 'low', and it keeps the temp in there about 82 all the time. Seems to be working good so far. An elec. blanket may be 'overkill'.. but the heating pad works nice. Also I wouldn't wrap the jars, seems like that would definitely get them way too hot.
