Need advice on the right shit, quite literally...

So theres this large horsebarn that I drive by everyday with a LARGE pile of shit out front. This pile of shit is 6-7 foot tall x 12-15 ft long x 3-5 foot wide. It includes horse shit, and wheat straw bedding. Theres a front end loader out front that he uses to turn the pile im assuming. This pile is the color of dry coir (coco fiber). Is this the right shit to be used for cultivation?

If I picked up large amounts of this shit, spread it out in beds in my yard, and kept it watered, could I expect Pan Subbs to fruit eventually?

get a shovel and go as deep as you can towards the middle and that's where the good shit is literally.

Hey there,

Well, you have found the correct substrate for Panaeolus subbalteatus.
-BUt, the horse manure/hay is also the correct substrate for many other species of mushrooms, includeing several non-active Panaeolus mushrooms.
-So, you wont be guaranteed to be cultivateing one type of mushroom in the yard.
In fact, the act of moving or transporting the horse shit/hay seems to slow down magic growth and then lets the other Panaeolus mushrooms of which are not psychoactive, to start growing instead. This something that i have observed from bringing cowpies home of which are already fruiting Ps. Cubensis mushrooms in the wilds of Florida.

-This is of course not always the case, because usually the cow pies will put out 1 or 2 decent flushes of cubies. 

In the wilds, a single pile of cow or horse manure is not limited (or innoculated) to host only one type of mushroom mycelium.. in other words, one week the cow pies can have fakes growing from them, and then one week after that you can come back and find Cubensis or Copelandia fruiting from the exact same mushroom-pie.

Secondly, depending on your location and if Pan subbs are known to grow from this pile of horse crap, i would just leave the pile there and visit it 24-48 hours after good rains.

Third, you might want to talk to Member/Moderator Mitchnast.
I do believe that he was successful with innoculating his parents lawn with subbs. :smile: He lives up in Nova Scotia.
