i wouldn't skip the simmering. i have in the past and the water retention wasn't as high, thus colonization times were slower. I have also noticed fewer incidence of contamination after simmering the wbs. It can be done without simmering however. georgem

Soak 24 hrs, at least.
Or, steep in hot water now, if you wish.
Do not BOIL. Not even SIMMER.
Just VERY HOT WATER.

Simmering can be a great way to F/U your WBS. I've only tried simmering twice, it takes far to much observation.
The best method I've found is just a 24 hour soak. It's also the easiest AND fastest (if you plan ahead) in IMO. You just put seeds in a bucket and cover with water 24 hours ahead of time. Standing by a pot on the stove watching it carefully (the only way I've been able to get it right.) takes just too much of my time.
edit: ahh nevermind, Agar has spoken LOL.

if you dont wanna worry about water retention, just try adding a bit of verm to your wbs.
i actually just tried a ratio of 70% millet 15%verm 15% worm castings/poo. it works great and i didn't simmer. just soaked for 24 hours, drained and pc'd. didn't even have to rinse off with HOT water. Agar's right though... don't bother simmering. its a waste of time when working with wbs. the seeds themselves don't have the capacity to hold a large amount of water (or enough to really gain anyhting by simmering).
Rye on the other hand.... i always simmer.

If you want to COOK WBS, have grains BURST & have all the WBS release sticky starch. BOIL IT.
You will often end up with WET SPOT goop, in your jars.
If you want to HYDRATE WBS, read the following post. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/3982155#Post3982155

Yes, I believe the STEEPING is a better solution than simmering as well. Although I've had success with simmering and getting a few burst seeds, they don't shake as well.

The PC shouldn't dry out your jars. UNLESS you try to speed things up by forcing it to release pressure by lifting the weight and letting the steam shoot out. That rapid loss in pressure will cause the water inside the jars to boil and can dry them out a bit. You have to let the pressure relive its self.

I should have been more clear, sorry.
I ment the water/moisture inside the GRAINS that are inside the jars.

I'm going to re-post this. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/3982155#Post3982155
It's so critical.
I'm going to say that it's likely that your not allowing the grain to absorb the water it needs. If you follow the info in that link. Then drain until not a drop will drip when you shake the colander then your WBS WILL be at the right moisture content. Set up your jars with tyvek or polyfil along with the disk and PC 90 minutes. That's all there is too it.
How exactly can you tell your grain is too dry anyways? I have some stuff colonizing right now that's about 80% done I THOUGHT it might be too dry because it would rattle inside the jars. But it looks like it will finish and it wasn't slow at all.

this thread was very informative, im happy i got to read it.
however, im not into WBS yet - couple more days!!!
so - im getting the picture that you basically 24hour soak, then put it into a colander and let it drain for how long?
and then just knock it up in the jars - no need to simemr or anything right?

your WBS from the other day, how is it? I would stick to trying that out till you made a new batch but anyways did you get ANY growth on the first one yet? You'll gte it sooner or later, you might also want to try 1/3 WBS 2/3 rye
