If you can use popcorn seeds without anything else in the jar, then could i just use medium grain brown rice as a substrate without verm.?

I don't think so, I also think it could get too wet and dense. Someone else might know more.

I have heard about people using whole rice, and it should work. The only hard part would be getting the rice to optimum moisture level without getting it too wet as rice tends to get quite sticky. Also, the price of rice compared to popcorn or wild bird seed kind of makes it unpractical. either way!

I have a feeling it will work if you obviously cook the rice first to soften and hydrate it. I'd only parboil it so that its soft, but would still be on the chewey side if you were to actually eat some.
I saw a brf/verm jar that wasn't covered well during boiling and took on a LOT of water (as in it weighed double what the others did). The brf clumped together in a brown gelatinous goo that I thought no way in hell would work. It was shot up anyway for the sake of science and low and behold it colonized just as well and as quickly as normal. It did however have a slow start germinating, while normal jars showed signs in 3 days, the goo jar took more like 6... but from there it was off to the races!
So there you have it... obviously WAY too much moisture, seemingly way too compact, yet the myc didn't think twice to gobble it right down. I know others have, and I think you can have success with straight brown rice with a little adjusting. An idea might be to actually cook your rice until it does get really soft, and mix it say two thirds cooked rice to one third uncooked rice. The uncooked rice will help keep the mix more airy and sort of play the role of verm. The uncooked rice will also gradually absorb moisture out of the cooked rice during colonization, and if you get the ratio right you might end up with a nice happy-medium by birthday time where everything is pretty uniform... and in the end that's a crapload more nutes than 1/4 cup of brf in a regular pf jar recipe. In fact the more I think about it, the more I'd like to see it happen myself.

well i was just curious because we have a bag of unopened organic brown rice and i was like whoa, perfect! I already have a grow bag colonizing, and it's been about 5 days. I have like a whole syringe left pretty much, and I kinda think it's a waste to just use it for that bag. I don't really feel like going out and buying vermiculite because i don't even know where to get it, and wherever you can get it im sure there isn't one around here. so if anyone has anymore info on just using brown rice, not brown rice flower, it'd be appreciated. or if someone has a differenct recipe with things that you can easily find around the house, that'd be helpful too.

i'm pretty sure it's been done before. Actually, i think I once saw something over at Mycotopia's archives about this. I'd try taking a glance over there. If not there, go ahead and checkout thenook.org's archives. Those are good too.
