Progress & Questions

Hello all! For the purpose of identification only, I ventured into international waters with the Homestead kit. Less than a month ago, I was satisfied with the mycelium growing on the rye, and planted it in the soil. The myc spread well, and seemed to be properly fibrous and white as snow. On the 10th of April, I noticed it had developed a grey fuzz, and it had spred pretty badly. At this time, there was a single visible pinhead. I determined, with the help of trolling these here forums, that the fuzz was indeed cobweb, and I hosed the bitch down with peroxide. See image:

The next day, there was no longer a fuzz, though it looked as though perhaps the corpse of the cobweb was still present. To be safe, I hosed it down yet again with peroxide. On this day, the single pinhead had grown considerably. See image: (the white blotches are the peroxide bubbling)
On the 12th of April, I didn't notice any evidence of grey fuzz, and the landscape was dominated by little baby mushrooms, Alpha pinhead growing like mad. But although I didn't notice at first sight, when I photographed the tub, there were a few small patches of shiny, greenish slime visible, though the existing mushrooms seemed undaunted. See image:
On the 13th of April, the babies are all growing like crazy. I see no evidence of cobweb, but the green slime spots are still evident. The shrooms seem to be healthy and rocketing straight up to the heavens. Should the goo spots be a worry? I'm familiar with mycelial piss, but I don't want to jump to the conclusion that this is what I'm seeing. See image:

Update April 14 Progress is simply amazing. The first pinhead sprouted fully, and veil broke, so I plucked it and have it drying. I knifed the shaft to be sure there was no internal contamination, and it looks pretty damned clean. There is white fuzz growing on the lower portion of the stem, but it's snow white and I assume it's myc.

I don't see anything wrong in those pictures. Congrats on a successful first grow! My first grow was from a kit as well. It's a great way to learn for first timers. RR

Hey, thanks for the reply! Yeah, I was shocked at how quickly they started springing up after I sprayed the surface with peroxide.
I do have one question, though. At the bottom of the chamber, underneath the soil, there are a few pools of a dull yellow liquid. It's the same substance that you see in a few spots on the surface in the photographs, but a bit more concentrated. Now, the shrooms are growing healthy and such, and from what I can tell, they're perfectly fine. What could this buildup of liquid be? If it's "wet spot", would they still be growing so strongly and rapidly? Moving the chamber around, I see that the consistency of the yellow liquid is pretty much the same as water...it's not thick and slimy like it looks to be.

The yellow liquid is mycelial metabolytes. They are produced in response to stress, either from bacteria/molds or excessive temperature. They are protective, so since your project is doing well, the metabolytes are doing their job. Enjoy your harvest. RR
