Perlite and Condensation
    #5511456 - 04/13/06 08:38 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I tried using perlite for a humidity base. It worked well enough to soak every thing in my terrarium including the cakes. The cakes had the greenish/blueish fuzz growing on them indicating that they were not getting enough moisture; plus they were very light. The obvious answer to why everything in my terrarium was soaked would be that I could have used too much water in the perlite. However, if this was the case, then why were my cakes drying out?

Also, this may be a dumb question, is there any reason to use a drip shield in the terrarium with perlite? I don't ever see anyone talking about using a drip shield with the perlite base. With all the condensation forming on the lid I figured it would help.

I should rephrase that. There was white fuzz to begin with then it got this green/blue tint. Anyways I read another post that said it was bruising from the caseings not getting enough moisture.

Two things. First, the condensation is caused by a temperature difference between inside and outside your terrarium, not excessive humidity. It's the same principle that makes your windows get condensation in the winter, even though it's warm and dry inside the house. You shouldn't heat the terrarium. If it's too cold in your house, get a space heater in the room the terrarium is in.

Second, perlite will not work if it's soaking in water. You should rinse the perlite under a faucet of running water, then let it drain well, and dump into the terrarium. NO standing water.

It sounds like your cakes dried out due to low humidity and that's the reason for the bluing.

You should use a drip shield in your terrarium.

Thx RR! I've been on a rant about condensation for the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I'm not RR or Agar so ppl don't believe me about what causes condensation! haha Go figure.

Anyways, I'm just chiming in about the drip shield.

The drip shield is part of some of the ancient teks. I think I read 3 or 4 PF style teks that all included a drip shield, in various places.

Perhaps a link so the BRF/PF style teks will help you?
