Can anyone recommend a good cell phone?

I'm reluctant to walk into the store and just buy one on a whim, since I'm afraid I'll make another poor decision. I don't really trust the salespeople there.
The current phone I have is old and broken (kinda sucked even when it was new). I can barely hold a conversation due to the constant chopiness, even when the phone says I have a full signal. Clarity is the most important factor here, as it is my only phone (no house phone) and this breakdown in commincation is causing me a lot of problems. I'm not even completely sure if it's the phone, or the service provider that I have (cingular) that make it so shitty.
I'd also like it to have a decent camera. I don't need it to have any other features really, and I'd like to spend $100 at the most, without a contract. Does anyone know of any phone models like this?

This one.

Seriously though, a guy I work with was telling me about his Nokia 6102, and it seems pretty decent. Check it out. http://www.letstalk.com/reviews/reviewdtl.htm?pfId=888

Nokia's 6820 is cool. http://www.nokia.ca/english/products/6820/6820.asp
So is the Treo 650, if you're looking for a full PDA

I currently own a Nokia 6101 (just one model # below the 6102 linked by jcdangerously)
Its a very cool phone. Works great, great connections all the time. Ive had it since october, battery still lasts quite a long time. Depending on what i use it for, i only need to charge it once a week as of right now.
BUT. Here's a big but. The memory on mine is 4.4 MB shared. It is relatively 'small'. I can only have a few videos on there at one time. It can store quite a few pictures too. Ive heard most other phones have a lot more memory than this. The 6102 has only 3 MB shared! Mine has no expansion port for any sorta flash card, so im doubting this one has one.
I know phone cables are expensive. I wanted to get one onetime and it was like $50 i think. =\
The good thing is, you can lower the 'quality' settings of the pictures, (High, Normal, Low) and the rez size (640x480, 80x96). My lowest settings yield pics that are like 2.1kb. The highest quality ones are around 65 kb.
The videos are a bit choppy, but picks up sound quite well, and plays them back nice and loud too.
Anyway, other than the small memory size, this phone is really cool and im really happy with it. Recommended.

First off, dont buy anything motorola. No razrs or slvrz. I'm sure you can upgrade your service. Pay money for a phone. Dont take the one thats free after rebate. Spend money and get a good phone. With Cingular go with a http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/9300

I have this one. It's 'shock proof' because it has some kind of rubber coating so when you drop it now and then it doesn't break

The Nokia 6101 is a good deal at the moment. If you live in the States, you can get this from T-Mobile for free if you purchase it online. I don't work in our activations department, but I can seriously look into this for you on monday. I have nothing to gain, I'm not a sale rep or anything. But I hate it when a brother gets fucked over because of a cell phone.
Also remember, lots of wireless providers jack charges up. And in my experience, they'll have a clause somewhere, or an insert that lets you cancel up to 30 days after receiving this statement or new charge. I've helped many friends weasel out of a $200 Early Termination Fee. At this point in time, I'm on a retention rate plan with Rogers.
250 Whenever minutes (day time) Unlimited Early Evenings and Weekends (Starting at 6pm!!) Network features like call forwarding, call waiting, etc
So play your cards smart. Be a good customer, pay bills on time, pay-fucking-attention to what you sign up for and things should be all right. After 10 months, the cards change. You're now a valued customer and providers will open up lots of retention rate plans. Advise them that you're thinking of porting out, or looking at a family time plan with their competition and the doors open up.
I just upgraded to the Motorola Rokr E1. I love it. I modded the shit out of mine and figured, I should be getting a better deal on this phone. A 3 year contract is what I signed up for, I don't give a shit. I can find a way to cancel or transfer service - I'm the man. I called in, without even trying I got $80 in credit. Shweet. A dealer I know erased checked my account memos to find nothing in regards to escalated calls, or retention credits! Even sweeter! I'm a "good" customer!
The trick to getting my retention plan was calling in and asking about the Buyers Remorse period (Trigger statement). I called directly into the Retentions department, advised that I may take my phone back, pay the $200 ETF and go with another provider. Why? I'm happy with things, but my rate plan has far too little minutes... can't check them either with Rogers, so there's another trigger. I mentioned that a friend at their competition will give me a free Razr which I'm ho-hum about, but atleast it's free with a 3 year contract and the coverage is the same...... rep offers more credit, I tell her I'm not a credit junky and I apologize if I'm rude, I have no quarrels with her at all and we chat off-topic for a bit... she surprises me by not only offering credit, but the exact retention rate plan I was phishing for. I tell her what a good job she's done and ask for a sup. No one's around so I can commend her, so I ask to be transferred to her manager. I left a voicemail with her rep-id saying that she's knowledgable, very friendly and a huge asset to their company - I would have otherwise cancelled had I not been "educated" about better rate plans. Yippy skippy, got everything I wanted and my account just shows a call or two where I was about to churn.... so I still have leeway to call in and get more credit down the road.
I worked in T-Mobiles Business Care department for a while, and because I was the only senior rep on the floor I took all the supervisor calls and escalations. I quickly became the man at things like this. I've helped friends in real life get free phones, retention rate plans and understand their stuff more than they ever would. Wireless providers are shady for the most part, but exploit what you can. Is it wrong? Well, my take is that if you're knowledgable about this, then why not? I NEVER call in bitching and screaming because I've been in their position too, and you won't get jack shit. I call in, maybe smoke a joint before and act mellow, don't get too technical or stuck up and I'll get what I want without an arguement. I hope that YOU get a good deal too. If you need any help, tell me if you're in the States or Canada and I'll do whatever I can for ya. Activation prices with any company are awesome, just stick with a 1 or 2 year agreement and go with whoever offers the best coverage or rate plans. You can always PM me if you need to.
