Even pinset urgh

I did 14 trays of hpoo and BRF and on almost all of them the mush were growing up from the sides. Why is this? Also howcome i cant get an even pinset on top of the colinized substrate? The trays are the roasting foil pans 14" by 10" 2 5/8" depth

when the mycelium grows it compacts it's self tighter so you will have this especially on second flushes. remember, shrooms grow where the light can be seen.

if you want an even pinset, wait to but a casing layer on until all the substrate is colonized 100% then add casing mix the the top. then if parts start growing a little faster than the rest just add a little more casing mix to the overgrown spots until the mycelium colonizes evenly. when the casing layer colonizes evenly. you will have an even pinset. also when you have some mushies that pop up before the rest simpley cut them off at the stalk with sterile scissors. this will help prevent yanking out undeveloped primordia and leave you with a very nice pinset.

The top isn't fruiting probably due to the fact of side pinning...Once you get a pinset, that's the set you'll be dealt until they're been picked...So if you get a BUNCH of roomies on the sides, then you probably wont on the top.
