why such small shrooms?

it was my first grow, so at least I had shrooms at all. But they were all so small. I think the best of em weighed only .3 dry. I still had plenty of shrooms, but when I take them out I have to take out so many and I feel like it is fucking up my casing a lot more. I grew on wbs cased 50/50 peat/verm with some lime. The strains were cambodian and burmese yangoon from ralphster. The cambos were just crumbled and cased with verm 2" substrate depth. The Burmese were peat/verm and 4" depth. A few BY got pretty big, but for the most part the Cambos were bigger as a whole and weighed more dry. Where could I have gone wrong? Is there anything else I can do to get em bigger?
here you see decent flush but small shrooms

It sounds like you had an uneven pinset. I say that because when most people have only a FEW big mushrooms and some small ones, it's usually due to not having a bunch of mushies (therefore the myc. concentrates on giving lots of nutes to some mushies and not others)...ectect.
How did the pinset look?
And how big of a surface area was it? 2inch depth, but what was the legnth and widith?

well you sort of answered your question. the cambos had half the substrate depth. also did you mix in any verm to your grain? if i do straight cased grain i mix in a bunch of wet verm. those grains just can't hold enough water. i bet thats your problem. also maybe you want to fan more dunno how much you were doing that.
edit: be happy you got shrooms man! thats a start. once you have that down then you can start fooling with going for perfect insets and huge monsters. gotta start somewhere right.

^^ not to be a dick but i think it matters the type of grain used, rye holds plently of water for me to case but wbs lacks the capacity.
You would be surprised at how much larger shrooms get when working with poo....

Hey Skeletor, Do you mix the vermiculite in with your WBS before or after PCing the jars?

In my opinion, the substrate depth, coupled with the substrate medium, caused your small mushrooms. This is assuming that your fresh air, light, and temps are in line. You can easily get away with smaller substrate depths using manure, but WBS doesn't have the nutrients or moisture holding properties to support large flushes at shallow substrate depths. At least in my experience.
I did a grow recently using a substrate depth of 1.5" of manure and grew some monsters.

i don't use rye i use wbs anyhoo. id still mix verm in any grain just beucase its so damn cheap why not. i put a spoon full of dry verm in the bottom of each wbs jar before PCing. this lets me not have to drain for the 30 more mins some people do. also i can then add a bunch of LC or spore solution and not have to worry about too much water. i don't always use a lot of inoculent but i add the same amount of verm beucase i add verm later anyhoo. then when i case i add more wet verm to get some more water in there. ive never not done this beucase i always new wbs lacks moisture so i don't know how much better it is.

i think i am going to just start spawning the wbs to poo in the future to fix this problem. I will probably continue to use the wbs as spawn since it is so cheap and accessible.
