Various Questions -- LC, Tyvek and Continuous Myc

1) I've seen what can only be described as "plugs" in the top of PC jars. What are they, what do they do and can I make them myself?
2) Some teks have advocated using tyvek on the jars. The way I'm reading it, the tyvek replaces the lid entirely and then the threaded ring goes over that, pressing the tyvek to the jar. In some instances it could be read that holes are punched in the lid then the lid is placed on the jar, THEN the tyvek, then the threaded ring.
Which method is correct? Should I make my holes larger if I use tyvek?
3) What is the best way to keep myc "in stasis" so I have some available to knock up new jars whenever I'd like? Is it possible to simply let an LC jar sit at room temperature indefinitely or will it eventually go bad? Can I retard that process by refrigerating the LC?
Maybe I could keep a "running myc" available by creating an LC and when it's colonized, starting up a few jars using my existing LC and retaining only the most robust jar. Lather, rinse, repeat?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I ordered my spores today (Ecuador from Spores101) and now I'm doing some heavy research on the various teks I'll be employing (likely WBS in TiT with 50/50+).
Also, the gods have smiled upon me; I learned today that there is a place within walking distance that'd be glad to let me take away some hpoo, gratis.

1)The plugs are self sealing injection ports. As found on vacuutainers.
2) Just tyvek and no lid with hole(s) leads to your jars drying out. The tyvek teks use a hole(2) filled with polyfill. The tyvek usually goes under that lid, then the lid is placed onto the tyvek covered jar, then coffee filter(s), then the ring. I just drill a 3/8" hole and cover with a layer of micropore tape. Then PC, cool, inject through hole and put another layer of tape over that. Has worked great for me so far.. no tyvek, no polyfill, no BS.
3) LC can be stored in the refrigerator for a long time. This amount of time is up for debate. But I've read that cold LCs have been used up to a year after being placed in the fridge.
Good to hear you got yourself some Hpoo!

1- Could be an LC, need pics. edit(answered in above post)
2- It can be done various ways. What I do: 3/8" hole in center of jar lid. Jar lid, tyvek, rim.
3- refrigeration will extend the life by 4-5+ months. The LC will live for several months at room temp. You can create LCs from LCs, but genetic information degrades after several transfers, or so I have read.

1) Excellent. For security reasons I like to keep online ordering to a bare minimum, so is there any way to make this. From, say, silicon caulk?
2) Ok. I think I'll use your method. KISS principle and all.
3) I think I'm going to have to find myself a cheapo personal fridge then...

Yes, you could. But you can use the micropore tape for that as well.

Drill or poke a 1/8" hole in edge of lid of LC jar(so it's easier to draw the solution out). Cover with micropore tape or put a dap of high temp RTV silicone on each side of hole.

OK. I think I'll go with the straight-up micropore tape method. Sounds KISS to me.

Absolutely! If you run into contam problems, then you can try the tyvek method. But I haven't lost a jar yet using either method.
