dung straw (timothy hay) in a quart jar
    #550123 - 02/13/02 01:40 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

i want to use a quart jar- add a mixture of 50% composted cow manure (store bought) 50% chopped timothy hay and a 1/4 tsp gypsum. i just don't know how much water to add?? should i mix it up- then add water until i squeeze it and just a bit drips out- once it reaches this level - should i fill a quart jar with it and put it in a pressure cooker for 30 min? 60 min? or is there a specific amount of water i should use? i just want to utilize my pressure cooker (17qt) instead of boiling a pot of water and messing with all that nonsense. once sterilized- then i can just inocculate with a few cc's of spore solution (b+).

will this work? any other ideas? i am a dung newbie- so please help.

all replies are appreciated.

I think you might have a difficult time shaking the jars so the
mycellium can spread through everything. I say this because
I know someone who tried a similar formula in quart jars and
it was a waste.

I suggest making some PF style cakes and using them as
spawn for your formula in some bags. Do a search on some
straw teks and dung teks for some ideas.

A quart jar is probably too large for a cake style substrate which is what you are describing. Azurepower is experimenting right now w/ straw/flour in 3/4 pint jars and has had great results so far. I would mix your substrate separately for starters. Your manure should have approx. the correct water content already. Your straw needs to be soaked, drained, and then added to the manure after hydration. Mix your result up and put it into jars for PCing.
