Do I HAVE to pressure cook the substrate?

I know pressure cooking ensures sterelity but do I absolutly have to pressure cook the substrate. Dose it like get the brown rice and vermiculite going in the jars? I was wondering because I dont have a pressure cooker. don't want to go out and buy one and have successfully boiled my jars befor. I want to fill a glass jar with substrate thats too big to pressure cook. I was wondering If I can just inject the spore solution directly into the jar without pressure cooking it.

like you said, or what i think you said, you have successfully boiled jars before. if you dont use some method of sterilization before inoculation you run a huge risk of contams.

A jar thats too big to pressure cook? If you are using a pf type substrate that would take a very long time to colonize and increase your chance of contams. You must at least boil your jars although I wouldn't recoment boiling anything over 1/2 pints. A pressure cooker is the best investment you can make in this hobby.

Depends on the substrate. Poo and straw, no...only pasturize. BRF, YES...it MUST be sterile because myc is very slow to colonize BRF and by the time you have full colonization and it's not sterile, not all of the colonizing material will be myc. Boil those jars nice and good and MAYBE you'll be okay.

That's one big ass jar if you're using an AA 930 or 941!
If you've successflly boiled them before why are you asking if you can now?
A gigantic jar of BRF just really doesn't sound like a wise idea.

Yeah, myc takes a REALLY long time to colonize that much BRF. Bad idea dude. I've tried it and it went bad...contams fo' sho'!

The prob with big jars is that they tend to dry out. If your just looking to increase yeild then start casing them.

many small jars beats the same vollum of one big one. plus the small ones will go much much faster. also the big one woudl have to be pc'd or steamed far longer. andddd the bigone wouldn't work whereas the little guys will. stick to a bunch of 1/2 pints for pf.

I can fit a gallon jar in my A921 but why would I. Just use a myco bag or half gallons really to help colonization times.
