Mixing in 5.1

I'm not entirely sure how difficult it would be, without a college (or some equal) education in sound/audio poduction. However, I do believe it would make for a great contribution to the listeners of these tracks.
Imagine your favorite songs, your favorite albums, mixed in surround. The new sounds, imagery, and thoughts it could provoke, and the ride it could take you on.
I'm aware that not everybody owns a surround sound system, but with some quality mixes, it may be worth it to shell out the money for a decent one.
I'm thinking about putting together a little project, where some people interested can get together, talk about ideas, thoughts, share wisdom on the subject, and start producing tracks mixed in surround.
I'm not really a guru on the subject, so I could just be talking out of my ass. But, it sounded like a good idea when I thought of it.

mixing in 5.1 is fairly simple with a modicum of mixing knowledge, the only problem is that some insane figure like 90% of all surround sound systems are set up improperly, many with enormous phasing issues which not only destroys the intended effectual mix, but actually makes it worse than plain old stereo mix.

Set up improperly on the manufactuer's end? Or the user's end?
Simple physics principles or a FAQ/reference guide could help solve the problem on the user's end.
Has anyone here successfully mixed anything in 5.1? If so, did it turn out as you expected? What difficulties did you face? Was the final product worth the effort?

not on the manufacturers end, but the set up is wrong in most homes. The only thing that I have found to ensure your system is playing at optimal quality is the THX optimizer.
I have mixed in 5.1, as well as mixed for practice on a Binaural head.

Anything mixed in 5.1 would take it to a whole new level. Which is why i'm so eager to do it. Where to start though, that's what i'm not sure of.
psilocyberin, you said you've mixed in 5.1 before. What sort of equipment/programs did you use? How was it different from normal stereo mixing, aside from the multi-dimensional effects, was it harder, the same? Where can eager people like myself get started?

Acid Pro has a great surround mixing interface. I have helped mix a Showtime Comedy Hour with Adell Givens and Earthuake (remember them?) in 5.1, but it was only crowd noise that was in surround.
but yeah, go with acid pro, but first make sure that your surround system is hooked up 100% properly before trying to monitor the mix on it. http://www.cnet.com.au/hometheatre/0,39025963,40056302,00.htm can help run pairs of White and Pink noise through every combination of your speakers to check for phasing issues.
