submersible fishtank heater question

So my old TiT heater crapped out, saw a new 50W one on sale for $14 bucks and saw that it had an 85F degree overheat protection - sounds perfect! Drop it in Monday, fire her up and I'm cookin at 84F nice and steady. Was fine all day Tuesday. Today (Wednesday) I go to check on it, and I'm down to about 72! I didn't think to take a look at the heater when it was working right, but I took a look at it now and there's an orange light inside that is flickering on and off like a broken neon sign at a shady dive bar. My old one didn't have a light at all so I'm not sure that this is normal (especially considering its not throwing any heat!) I'd think it should be on steady?
The instructions say that when it does hit that 85F threshold the thermostat kicks off a protection... I'd have figured that means it would stay off til it dropped below 85 but then continue to heat, or is it like the thermal protect in other appliances where you have to unplug it for an hour or so to let it reset? (If so, what a pain in the ass!) Its unplugged now and I'll try it again when I get home, just wondering if anybody had any experience like that or if I should just be planning on taking it back after work...
As added ironic insult to injury my hot water tank apparently died over the night too and I had to shower with cold water... the warm water gods are frowning upon me this morning.

Yup it is... so that's the deal then? It just shuts off completely when it hits 85? Boo.... does it ever turn back on?
Haha anybody know any kinds of fish that absolutely need 80F+ temperatures to survive? I should go back complaining it shut off and killed all my fish!

i was exited at the pet store when i found one for so cheap but i guess its true that you get what you pay for. im probably going to get one of those 100 watt ones that say <fully> submersable. not that the topfin wasnt fully submersable but it only said "submersable" on the box instead of "fully submersable." what great logic
yeah go back and say when you woke up in the morning your fish tank was shattered from the huge block of ice inside of it

I think I have the same one... you just have to mess with it until it stays on :P i dunno if mine has the shutoff protection but its workin ok for now. i actually put it on the side of my TiT so I could adjust the temperature... taking the tub out to change it is fucking annoying.

They usually have magnetic thermostats. When new they might need a few shakes to get it going. Keep it under water and give it a light rattle, the magnet should kick in and get the heating going again. AFter a few times it should sort of loosen up and be OK.
