Vermiculite to increase humidity?
    #550500 - 02/13/02 07:54 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I was wondering if vermiculite can be used in place of perlite to increase the humidity in small terrariums. If it can't, at what kind of store can perlite be purchased?

Most garden stores have perlite...also most big stores like lowes or home depot will have it in the garden section...

Verm is not typically advised to use as a humidification. Try using a bubbler with water in there if you cant find perlite.

Should I add some peroxide into the water/perlite mixture to decrease chance of contams in water?

What I do, some other dudes might have a diff way, but this works for me...

Mix up 4 cups of water, and 1/3 cup of h2o2. Mix with your perlite and let sit for a few mins. Drain the perlite somehow, getting most the water out. Then just lay on the bottom of your terr...

i thinbk you should try it! i have seen pics with a fruiting chamber full of verm in place of perlite, the cakes were set directly on the verm. this guy got giant flushes! thee shrooms even started coming out of the verm inches away from the cakes. the reason ppl dont use it for humidity is verm holds water and perlite releases it. verm can invite contams in such a massive amount. try it and tell us what happens! be very very clean about it. i bet after a few flushes maybe even sooner you will get contams though

It would be near impossible to keep it clean enough if I was using the fanning method of air exchange, right? I'd have to open it 3 times a day to circulate the air....opening it to contamination.

I've used Vermic in my casings without problems.

BUT....

Perlite can be found in the exact same place Vermic, so you might as well use that if your worried about contams etc....

When I went to Wal-Mart, the Perlite and Vermiculite were on the same shelf beside each other. If you can't see any out on the shelf, ask an employee to check in back for you. a 10 minute trip to the store and $3 is probably worth the effort to keep contams out.......

Why would vermiculite be more prone to contams than perlite?
Wouldn't H202 help this?
