Sensitive Central Nervous System
    #5506420 - 04/12/06 01:37 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I've been diagnosed with what my doctor calls "dysautotomia", which isn't life threatening, but can be a nuisance. Which means, my autonomic nervous system is out of whack sometimes. So basically, every type of activity on my body, is exaggerated.

For example, after I go for a jog or exercise, my heart rate will take much longer to lower to a normal resting rate, than a person without autonomic nervous system problems. Plus, I get fatigued quicker. Competetive long distance running isn't even an option for me.

Ofcourse, marijuana increases heart rate in everyone. For me, it's exaggerated. I can literally see my chest moving up and down, and my whole body pulsates as my heart pounds. This is what brings on panic attacks when I used to smoke pot.

I know psilocybin mushrooms increase heart rate. But, my questions is..(to anyone that may have a similar issue, or anyone who may know)
How much do shrooms increase heart rate?

I've shroomed close to 15 times in the past with excellent results.. but that was when I cared absolutely zero about what my body was telling me.

common sense says that pyschedelia is worthless in comparison to your personal health. perhaps try meditation and other natural highs. i dont think anyone here is going to condone usage of mushrooms in conjunction with your medical condition. its a bad idea.

Im sure I have that same problem, and it has helped trigger anxiety attacks for me also. For me, its not so much of an issue when working out, but its a huge issue now adays when smoking pot, or using psychedelics(though this seemed to have developed over time and was never a problem years ago). In my experience, without having anxiety to begin with, shrooms raises the heart rate far more than marijuana when one has a similare or the same condition as you do.

Well, if you've already taken them 15 times without any problems, it doesn't make sense that you would have any problems now. I don't know exactly how much mushrooms increase the heart rate, but the answer is "a little bit," if you use LSD as a model.
Plus, mushrooms have been used so extensively for so many hundreds and thousands of years that I would have expected to have heard about physical danger like this. That doesn't mean it's not something to consider, though.
Do you suffer from anxiety at all?

Have you ever beeen prescribed any medications such as beta blockers?

I've got periodic anxiety, which I've got a prescription of xanax for. I've never actually needed to take a pill since I got the prescription in the middle of January of this year. So, my anxiety is under control for the most part... mostly because I don't get myself into situations where my heart will pound(smoking pot or stuffing my stomach full of food)Exercising is completely fine for me..A jog is even quite relaxing. Most of the time I do feel I'd be able to handle a mushroom trip.

Orginally the anxiety was a product of my racing heart, before I went to the doctor and had multiple tests done.. All showing that my heart is perfectly fine.. physically and electrically. They did tell me what beta blockers do, but did not suggest me taking them, because I really don't have a reason to.

Now, I use to smoke pot nonstop in the past, and had this issue, but I just didn't pay too much attention to it. I realized my heart was pounding, but didn't care. I don't remember even thinking about my heart at all while tripping. Well, somewhere along the lines, I started to care.. which lead me to the anxiety and the doctor's office, and now here.

I know that if I take shrooms and my heart pounds, it won't be life threatening.. but could possibly cause me to faint(came very close while on pot), and have a bad trip.

I think there was a misspelling of your condition in your post. It's "dysautonomia" not "dysautotomia" I believe...

After doing a little reading, it seems you would be better off avoiding anything with stimulant properties but as far as psilocin goes, as long as you don't get any serious anxiety during a shroom trip, it looks like it would be OK. I'm not a doctor though.

Its hard to really give feedback on something like this since nobody wants to give permission to shroom if it can trigger something dangerous with your medical condition. HOwever, I would say you should be fine doing psychedelicc...Is an elevated heart rate or hypertension what your worried about? DOing any physical exercise would elevate those more than shrooms.

You're right Kaleidoscope, the term is "dysautonomia".. my mistake. I do refrain from using any kind of stimulant. Caffeine sends my heart into a frenzy. I think you may be right.. about not getting anxious during a trip and it should be fine.

OrizonsHorizon, I completely understand. I'd say my main concern is, in fact, my heart rate, and more of a hypOtension, where blood pressure drops. It's the reason why I stopped smoking pot. According to my doctor, my heart is perfectly fit, so it would be able to handle a slight raise in blood pressure, which what I think shrooms do.(correct me if i'm wrong) I'm thinking a temporary hypertension would be better than a temporary hypotension, in my situation.. that way I wouldn't faint I don't think. So, if shrooms do raise blood pressure, my main concern would ultimately be a pounding heart.. more so than just an elevated heart rate. I've found I get much less anxious with an elevated heart rate than with a combination of an elevated heart rate and a pounding heart beat.

As far as exercising.. I don't get anxious the least bit as my heart rate elevates and pounds, mainly because I know the source of it's elevation.. and I know it's doing some good.

I'm kind of rambling/venting a bit, just trying to make some sense of this.

Thanks for the responses.

I think I will try shrooming on a small dose as soon as I find some. If that goes well, I'll up the dose a bit and go from there.

"Caffeine sends my heart into a frenzy"............

I too have a problem with caffeine, and would drink two cups of coffee if you payed me a hundred dollars worth of physical hell.

Just so you know, some people are on the same page.

You're absolutely right stemmer. I think "a lot" of people are on the same page. My doc told me that he's seen countless cases of this.. especially in my age group(early 20s), for some reason.

That's the one test that they didn't do.. the tilt table. I'm really not sure why they didn't, because I can tell that my blood pressure drops like crazy at times.. like when I stand up from sitting for a little bit, often times my heart will race and I start to black out. This isn't an every day occurance I noticed.. like you said.. "if my symptoms are good on the day i am usually ok".

What are other methods of raising blood pressure, besides a beta blocker?
