I'm staring at this essay topic and drawing a blank:

analyze the reasons for relatively few congressional or presidential accomplishments during the gilded age, despire high voter participation in national politics

The only thing I can think of is big corporations paid off presidents. If you guys could mention a few events or companies(standard oil?) that I can begin researching to do my essay that would be cool.

Im not history buff but I will throw something out there. The more people that vote = more people you can piss off = less votes at election time or the more people that vote = the more people that care = harder to pass a bill

The majority of the leaders were currupted themselves. If I am not mistaken, there was no Australian ballot and people had to yell out who they vote for so basically everyone could be pressured into voting for certain people.

You could walk into a bar and buy everyone a drink as long as they vote for your guy. That is why there weren't any accomplishments. It was a frenzy of getting everyone to vote in high numbers even though most of the people didn't care. Plus a lot of the population was first generation immigrants, all they wanted is some food and money and voting gave them some of that food and money.
