-------------------- Republican Values: 1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you. 2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child. 3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer. 4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

hmm i say go to court up until trial at least... attend the pre trials and see what your lawyer has to say. Usually by then the state will have already offered you a deal and what he thinks about either accepting the deal or challenging it. if your friend was caught with the plants in his house prolly better take whatever deal they offer, if you take it to trial they usually give u more time if found guilty. if the deal they offer is more time then your friend is willing to spend in jail then you have to option of fleeing, but he won't get refugee status in canada (nor even make it past customs with a case pending), dunno if you're familar with Rene Boje but she has a much stronger case then your friend and a good legal team and will prolly still get extridited (http://www.reneeboje.com/)
But ummm... i faced a similar situation and fleed to canada, i made it into the country by remarkable luck but living up here is quite difficult without proper papers. a job is very difficult to find illegally , you can't grow pot and sell as its so common up here it's pretically worthless, without me having people to support me there is no way i could have surived. if your friend must flee i think his best bet would be to go to a diffrent state, within a decent population (larger city) and find work. it will be much easier being a citizen with proper papers and the texas authorties are not gonna conduct a nation-wide man hunt for 10 pot plants. he would be pretty safe so long as most importantly he ~does not drive~ nor do stupid stuff to attract the law. i bet 90% of ppl arrested on warrants are pulled over for some stupid trafic violation, lincense run and they see your warrant. yah i pulled that number out of my ass but its the easiest way to get caught.
lots of ppl say, yah if so and so happened i'd just flee the country, unless you have tons of money or lots of hook-ups in said country its a pretty difficult thing to do. unless you wanna live on the streets and such. he's not a murderer, outside of the local PD no one gives a shit about ur friend and they're not gonna spend resources looking for him even in another state, so why bother all the hassle of leaving the country. Just don't have run ins with the law, its not that hard so long as you do not drive or act like a fool in public. but i think if this is first offence and only ten plants he would get probation, maybe 30 days in county? nothing to be running from for the next few years, prolly best to just deal with it.

Running because of 10 pot plants doesn't sound like the best idea.

Okay, they should go down to Mexico, and then raise money for fake ID's and plane tickets to Australia

ShroomDoom said: they are both out on 40k bail and thinking of fleeing to Canada and trying to obtain refugee status because of the unjust drug war. i dont even think you can leave the country with a felony pending
sounds like a good idea untl they arrive a the border and are detained until the feds arrive to take them back, they then add a few more charges like 'unlawful flight to escape prosecution', they loose the bond and are detained without chance of bonding out again... the fleeing charge is another 5 years on top of what they'll already be recieving and I know for a fact that canadian border agents will detain them

Don't necessarily "fight" the charges, they should just plead their case and hope for a short sentence. According to NORML.com(which I believe is outdated, but it will be close) possession of 1-5 lbs(10 plants would roughly be little less than 3 lbs) is 180 days-2 years in state felony prison. If they're first time offenders, they'll probably get no more than 6 months. NORML doesn't list cultivation penalties, but they cannot be too much harsh than those.
You guys do realize that if they flee the country they have to live their entire remainder of their lives in seclusion and fear. They would ditch their family, friends and loved ones over skipping a probably 2 years or less sentence. Completely stupid, I don't even know why you guys should even think twice, and I'm amazed almost everyone in this thread told them to go to a foreign country. Completely idiotic.
EDIT: Although they don't list cultivation penalties for Texas, I researched my own state and one year is the maximum penalty. They should face the sentence, and I apologize if I misread something or skipped a post that made the sentence much more worse, somehow. I just find it hard to believe why everyone is telling him to ruin his life over such a short sentence...
