A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin It's a fantasy series that rivals Lord of the Rings...but it's more feudal medieval than Lord of the Rings. It's the first book in his series, A Song of Ice and Fire

Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins.

I will give that a big second everyone I have recommended that series to falls in love with it even people who don't read fantasy.
Also I recommend House of Leaves by Mark L. Danielewski its a brilliantly written book very dark and eery.

Cosmic Trigger by Robert Anton Wilson one of the most influential and heart touching books I have ever read. I would suggest anything by RAW but Cosmic Trigger and the Iluminatus Trilogy are his best works although Iluminatus is fiction but it is a must read for everyone.
