Opinions of Trusted Computing
    #5504324 - 04/11/06 04:35 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hey,

I'd be really interested in people's opinions on Trusted Computing, and what seems to be an unstoppable movement towards it by hardware manufacturers.

I won't try and give a technical opinion on Trusted Computing (as I am very much a computer enthusiast and hobbyist as oppossed to actually knowing anything ) other than to say it seems to rob the customer of power over their own machines.

It seems to be a situation where almost all the computer enthusiasts I know are entirely against it, but we are moving towards a situation where Trusted Computing will be mainstream and mandatory. Things like reports of new intel Macs carrying a TC chip or serious discussion on slashdot of integrating DRM into future linux kernels through the use of TC hardware scare me profoundly.

I'm hoping that people more knowledgeable about computers than I will give their opinions on TC and how likely it is to be implemented and become popular in the future.

I find it really, really, really scary. The internet seems to me to be an inconceivably positive force for freedom, and I can see something like Trusted Computing destroying the anonymity and liberty that make it what it is.

I agree with you, and although I don't know alot about TC, I do know enough that it could, potentially, really, really make something I enjoy suck.

It's just another form of control, and it's unnessesary. But I do have hope in the fact that there will always be a way around stuff like this. The die hards out there always seem to pull through!
