my first grow, couple questions

I'm currently growing 5 1/2 pint jars of GT and 5 of B+
For my substrate I used perlite (I used this thinking it wouldn't make a huge difference) organic wheat bran and rye flour, and mixed in the right amount of water.
Its been a week and a half since I inoculated my jars, and they all seems to be growing at their own rate, I have 2 jars that appear _very colonized, although I'm giving them some more time just to be sure.
My questions:
I was not aware that there was a need to remove the tape from the holes while in the incubation chamber, and despite my mistake, I still have tons of fluffy white mycelia growing and stretching out all over some of my jars. How much of a difference will removing the tape now have?
The jars where I barely packed in the substrate at all seem to be thriving, while those with a more compact substrate grow fairly slower. Does this always happen?
One of my jars (which was 1 of 2 experimental jars using white rice flour) seems very very wet, looks like water almost against the jar's surface. I'm not sure if it's bacteria or not, but the only space that mycelia is growing is up top near the protective layer of perlite. Could this just be excess water drowning the growth? I don't remember seeing it when I first inoculated, but I cant be completely sure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I got sour news for you jack, white rice flower dosnt have the necessary nutrients to grow shrooms that will do anything, I have heard they come out bunk and made the same mistake my first time. All isnt lost though, colonize them up then grain2grain transfer them into some BRF jars. As far as everything else goes, ihunno.

I don't think taking the tape off at this point would be detrimental at this point. With the jars already at least partially colonized, they will be more resistant to contamination than they would have been at the beginning.
And about the density, from what I've read the less dense the substrate the easier it is for the mycellium to colonize. I would think, though that those more densely packed will produce more and bigger mushrooms once they do colonize. I'm experimenting with this myself, out of the 6 jars I prepared I packed two down some because I had lots of extra substrate.

Perlite for a substrate... Anyone else know if this works? I didn't think so

Well, if the white rice flour doesnt have enough nutrients to produce decent shrooms, could I break up the cakes of the rice and wheat/rye and mix them together before casing? Would this have any benefits?
oh and grain2grain transfer? huh

Ok I removed the tape and put a layer of tinfoil over the holes which still alows for air transfer but will hopefully lessen my chances of contam than if I just left the holes open to the world

Did you put a layer of just plain perlite on top of your substrate? If not I might suggest using coffee filters as opposed to tin foil.

You need some kind of gas exchange for your jars to colonize properly. Case in point:
Quote:
_OttO_ said: I soaked some wild bird seed in water for 24 hours, drained well then loaded it into some jars.
All except for one of the jar lids were drilled with two holes, one small one for inoculation and one about the diameter of a pen.
The bigger of the two holes was fitted with a Polyfill filter for air exchange, the smaller hole was covered with electrical tape. I left one jar without the larger hole/polyfill filter as an experiment.
They were all covered with foil and pressure cooked for 75 mins, then left to cool and each was inoculated with 5CC of liquid culture.
These were then incubated at 84F, shaken once after 4 days, and this is the result after 9 days -

The jar on the right is obviously the one without the filter, and is showing very slow progress - highlighting how important gas exchange is for mycelium growth.
Sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place. GL.

yes, i have a 1/2 inch layer of perlite on top, and now the jars are covered with foil like i said before. I'll report back in a few days with the results. Hopefully the newly available air exchange will speed things up.

Just looked at my jars, they seem to be doing better, already showing faster growth. 4 of the jars I think should be ready in about 4-6 days
