Ohio subb hunting!!! all you need to know!
    #5502975 - 04/11/06 10:38 AM (18 years, 2 months ago)

Ok i've been lurking in the hunting section for a while now since the start of the season and all im hearing is shit about psilocybes. it's just damn irritating!!! i mean, what about all those seasoned subb hunting vets out there!!!! labouring away for days getting enough for 1 measley dose. battling 'foes' at every turn. running from mall security with pounds of active materials that weren't necisarily paid for.
Well, the season's starting and there is supposed to be a lot of rain during this week. i thought i'd repost the info i gathered last season to encourage some shroomites here to get out and find some actives in ohio.

So here goes: my experience hunting panaeolus subbalteatus.
-First off, get a field guide. there's nothing worse than someone who doesn't know what they're doing eating something they think is active and might not even be edible. no trip is worth risking your life. be 100% sure of a shroom before you just stick it in your mouth
-next, in my experience horse fields are crap. some of the biggest healthiest subbs i've found have been there,

but not in the quantity or reliability of other places. and there's no use risking a shotgun blast to the chest for some shit covered subbs!
-ok so where do I hunt? I have found that three things make a place perfect for growing mass quantities of ohio subbs. Well kept, well manured grass (the kind that's so green you want to just roll in it all day), a nice, man-made pond or fountaine, and geese. It's me theory that the geese are spore carriers, and they usually hang around these pond places.
-I have a lot of luck at local industrial parks and malls, they have places just like i've described
-get some sporeprints!!! i've had foes that mimic subbs so much that i want to beat the crap out of them. but you'll want to get some anyways to compare sporeprints. i carry a peice of paper with me at all times that shows some prints i took of subbs and foes right next to one another. you want them to be JET black. here's an example

-be familiar with the habits of the pann subb. Twisty stems, crowded gills, ring around the cap, sometimes conical,

sometimes flat and deformed. I've hunted in many places and the best thing to remember is ALL SUBBS ARE DIFFERENT
-Well the best tip i can give you is to find someone who knows what they're doing and hunt with them. There is no greater experience then field experience. plus with two people, you'll yeild more, and people will be less likley to confront you. Bond with your fellow ohio-ans!!!

Well that's about all the help i can give. Get your arses up early enough to put this to good use! it's my experience that most subbs dry out really quick so HUNT BEFORE NOON! there is supposed to be some nice rain this week so get out there!!! GOOD HUNTING!

Also, bales of rotting straw are great places to find subbs, especially in shady nooks. I prefer subb over cubes anyday, and I'm going to try to cultivate them this summer.

subs grow nearly everywhere... i'm looking forward the the season here in north eastern kansas... they usually follow the morels and precede the chanterelles.

This is an old post that you bumped, but I'm glad you did, the part about geese is interesting. Geese, as horses do, eat grass. I'm going to check out some geese stomping grounds.

Oh, and about subb hunting, since well manicured grass lawns with fertilizer works well, would they pop up on golf courses? Just a thought.

Oh, and I am kicking myself for this because I help a neighbor out a good bit and about a month or 2 ago I found some mushrooms on the lawn (very lush well kept and fertilized lawn) and I do believe they were subbs from what I now know... if only I knew more about them back then :frown:

that's the thing about subbs. If you don't know about them, you'll find a ton of them. The minute you start looking, it's "What the hell happened to all the little pretty belted mushrooms I use to find and throw away?"

I have pictures of cubes with subbs IN THE SHOT, and I overlooked them.

grrrrr

fuckin' subbs. always hiding from a ninja...

Subbs are not the best mushrooms to have a trip from, taste really bad, very low potency they are not worth the effort for me.

Altough if i were in an area with no other psilocybian mushrooms around i would definately go for them....

but since my area is crowded with actives i think i just keep skiping the subbs, they look beautiful tough. but i once eat a lot of subbs and didnt have a very strong trip
like 25 subbs i ate whereas i only eat 4 of other mushrooms and easily double the effects of those subbs
