Are these cakes going to work? (w/ pics)
    #5502623 - 04/11/06 08:05 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Alright, here's a rundown.

This is the 4th batch of cakes I've tried with these material. The first two had to be aborted, both of them had contams. The third time, I had no contaminations after 2 weeks, yet there was no mycelium growth on any of the cakes.

At least my method was sterile, since I thought that was the reason that the first two batches failed. But I'm thinking that the grade of my vermiculite (as fine as it comes), is too compact for mycelial growth. Or doesn't comply with a PF-like formula.

Alright, here is a picture of the substrate before going into the jars. For 12 jars I used PF max fruiting formula (6 verm, 3 cups BRF, 3 cups H20). The substrate was damp at best, I could not squeze any moistire out of the substrate at all, is that how it should be?

Here is a picture of a jar that had been done, but not cooked. Does it look like there won't be enough room/free air for mycellium to grow? Most pics of cakes look like they have more room due to larger grade of vermiculite.

There's a pic of a jar after I PC'd it.

So, I haven't inoc'd these jars up yet, I don't want to waste another syringe if my problem is the materials. Any help wise ones?

The vermiculite you are using looks fine, about the same that I am using with much success in PF cakes. There are so many factors contributing to contams, that it's hard to tell you a lot. Basically, be as clean as you can, use a PC if possible, and inoculate in a glovebox or very still and clean airspace. Did you buy the BRF or grind it? Sometimes rice goes rancid, and I find grinding your own chunky flour with long grain natural rice works better, IME. And it could be your spore source. I would probably order another print or syringe, and try that. But everything from your pictures looks pretty good, and I can tell you that finer grade of vermic. works fine. Good luck, and I am sure you'll get more responses.

The ones I made looked like that (yours looks just SLIGHTLY damper, but nothing to worry about) and they worked perfectly.

are you waiting until the jars cool down before pumping full of spores? at what temp are you allowing the jars to incubate?

The cakes look fine, good moisture content, a lot of people make them very wet their first couple of times yours look good. Try making a liquid culture and inoculate jars with that.

Alright, thanks guys.

I'm using a PC, yes. But only a 10 psi one. Like I said, I've used a 10 psi PC before and had no visible contams after 2 weeks.

I also did swich up my spore supplier this time around, so maybe that'll help.
