Depth or Area?

I have read that for bulk, you should use a 4 to 6 inch deep substrate depth. How much of a difference would it make if you used half the substrate depth and doubled you area.
Say if you had 5 pounds of poo (pre-pasteurized) in a 12x12 container. According to Tenn. Stud that would give you a 4 inch deep sub.
If you went 2 inches deep but have 2 square feet of surface area instead of 1, wouldn't that be better in many area's?
You're yield probably wouldn't change because it's the same amount of nutrients, but wouldn't your sub. colonize faster since it's not as deep, and it seems like you could get more off of your first yield because of the added surface area. you would probably not have as big 2nd and 3rd flushes, but it seems if you did get more off the first flush it helps cut your chances of contaminating before all nutrients are used up.
Thanks.
P.S. sorry i probably could have got the point across with alot less writing, but I'm really high and bored. Peace.

With horse manure I like 2 - 4 inch substrates. I would never bother with anything over 4. I'd rather make two tubs.

You pretty much answered your own question, my friend. The yield should be the same. The deeper sub will give you larger fruits, whereas the shallow, longer sub will produce smaller fruits and more of them. You are also right that increasing overall surface area should in turn increase first flush yield, but it will use more of your subs nutes. This longer, shallower sub could have the benefit of providing the same amount of fruit in less flushes than the deeper sub with less surface area. Just

and the more you get teh faster is normally my goal beucase teh more flushes the more time and chance to get contams. id rather have small fruits and everythign done in 4 flushes then few big guys done in 7 flushes but thats just me. sometimes i just want a big shoom to impress myself though.
