Which birdseeds?
    #5500806 - 04/10/06 06:35 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I was in the petshop today looking at all the different types of birdseeds they have and was wondering if you can use any old birdseeds to grow mycellium or do they have to be a certain kind?

I took a guess and bought a bag of Cockatiel seeds.

The ingredients are:
SUNFLOWER SEED, WHITE MILLET, OAT GROATS, CANARY GRASS SEED, RED MILLET, SAFFLOWER SEED, CALCIUM CARBONATE, ORANGE OIL, VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENT, VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENT, VITAMIN E SUPPLEMENT, MANGANOUS OXIDE, ZINC OXIDE, FERROUS CARBONATE, COPPER SULPHATE, SODIUM SELENITE, CALCIUM IODATE

Should I go ahead and start soaking them or will I bring the bag back?

I might just go out and get popcorn instead. I saw a mycellium culture tek where you colonize a whole grain rye quart jar then you take a teaspoon of rye out, drop it in a jar of sterlized water, shake it up then you can suck the water/spore solution into your syringe. Could I do the same trick with birdseeds or popcorn?

You want WBS (Wild Bird Seed). Any pet or grocery store will have what you need. I prefer Bird Ration brand WBS found in Wal-Mart.

You want ones where the ingredients have only grains and no chemicals

I agree. 94 cents for 2 pounds. It takes maybe 6 pounds for 12 quarts.

I bought some finch seed from the pet store that had all the ingredients you listed (calcium carb, orange oil, vitamin enriched. I think it was in a purple bag with a yellow top) thinking it would be better. Well it worked like shit, If you decide to use that I'd suggest rinsing it VERY well.

I bet that bag was more expensive then you needed to pay. 10 bucks for 40lbs is about right. I've seen even cheaper or slightly more expensive tho.

On the topic of creating spawn with WBS. If you haven't read these links you really should. Might save you trouble down the road.
